from what i remember in my law class in high school, one can never use a gun in self defense. they will get screwed
also, one can argue that marissa was acting in self defense becuse trey did push her violently. who knows that he wouldn't attack her after he finished with ryan? but it's moot because she used a gun

i may be wrong about the gun thing. you may be able to use a gun lethally if you feel your life is in danger
