Methinks he did something worse.
A. He disclosed information that was on his disk. If the thief had no knowledge of the value of the data on that laptop, he does now.
B. If nothing else, he gave the thief good reason to destroy the laptop.
Personally, I believe the prof. did more harm than good here...but it's still amusing.
