Default Re: Beaten to death..but still a dillema for # of chips needed

I have another post in the top 30 messages that talks about this very subject.

However to say lifetime, you can only do that if you constantly change what each chip is worth over time, if you use the denoms on the chip than good luck. As time goes on 10/20 and 20/40 will be small games and the LARGE games will be 25-50 and 50-100. Just as when I bought mine 1-4 Studd was the low and 5-10 was the high. For 8-10 ppl you are ok, but when you go to 20, you will run out of chips to use for BOTH cash game and tourney IF you do not want to constantly have to "make change" in the tourney.

I bought a set of 1200, 500 white 300 red 200 blue 100 orange and 100 black back in 93. It is a stretch to use them for a 20 person game with 300 in chips blinds starting at 1-2. And strange for many tourney players to start at 1-2 when the norm is eaiterh 5-10 or 25-50.

I cant do 30 ppl without bringing in the 100's and the just starts each player off with two few # of chips that it becomes an all in fest or a "make change" nightmare.

But then I am hyper critical about having the correct amount of chips for the given game type. When playing 10/20 I like ONLY blueon the table. 5/10 some white and teh rest red. A toruney , 3 colors max till final table and then 2 more colors. The reson is that the amount of chips in front of a player can change the game's action, Loose too tight. For instance, a 10-20 game with all blue will normaly be tighter than a 10-20 game with all red. Reason, ppl have more chips with red and therefore dont feel they need to tighten up sooner. Chips creat an illusion of your postion at the table. I often see new holdem players get nervous when they have only 5 chips left in a tourney EVEN if those 5 chips = 70% of thier starting buy in. Most ppl here will give you an answer that works as a "homemade" solution but won't give you the same feel as going to a REAL Casino. It depends on what you want the "feel" of the game to be.

If I was only getting 1000 I would go with 3 colors with a greater number on the center color. Maybe squeeze in a few 4th for LARGE chips.

If you can opt for the 2000, you WILL be better off for your purpose. I think that you need 5000-10000 to do what you really want, ""difinative" set of my lifetime..flexable for any situation, cash game or tourney"

i.e.

800 white 1 denom
2000 red 25
2000 blue 10
2000 green 25
2000 black 100
1000 purple 500
200 orange 1000
