Let's for the sake of the discussion say you make 2BB/100 hands playing 5/10 (again, this number is totally irrelevant, but we use it to have something to compare to).

The number is not completely irrelevant. If the player is a +3 BB/100 player at 5/10, then he would have to make 5/100 at 3/6 to have the same earn rate. Even though he would likely dominate the 3/6 game, he probably wouldn't be able to find bad enough players to make that much.

At the same time, someone who was a .5/100 player at 5/10, would probably do much better playing 3/6, and maybe even 2/4, especially when you factor in the larger variance and bankroll requirements.

I don't know where the breakeven point is, but I would guess that it is somewhere between those points.
