My first 50k hands at 5/10
      #1671699 - 02/04/05 01:32 PM

Well, I've played about 50k hands at 5/10 6max. Prior to this, my only 6max experience was 1-2k hands at party 1/2 6max and reading these forums a bit. I guess I'm satisfied with my results so far. I've won at a rate of 1.08BB/100, which is nothing great, but shows that I'm likely at least a winning player. Ideally, I'd like to get this winrate up to 2-2.5BB/100. How difficult do you guys think this would be? I've posted some stats from my first 50k hands, maybe you guys can give me some things to work on during my next 50k.

VPIP: 20.86%
VPIP from SB: 28.10%
Folded SB to steal: 86.15%
Folded BB to steal: 58.89%
Att. to Steal Blinds: 29.85%
BB/100: 1.08
WTSD: 34.02%
W$SD: 52.31%
PFR: 15.70%
Flop Aggression: 4.01
Turn Aggression: 3.27
River Aggression: 1.98
Folded to River Bet: 36.84

Yikes, I think you might be playing a bit too agressively here. Contrary to popular belief, the 5/10 6-max games are actually fairly passive except for some LAGs and TAGs. I think you may need to start respecting a few more raises, especially on the turn.

so do you think I'm calling down too much or 3betting turn raises too much?

I think you're doing too much 3-betting and making too many turn raises.

The calling down part is your went to showdown which looks pretty decent. Might be a tad too high but nothing major. It's probably fine.

Defend your BB less and stop going crazy on the flop and turn.

I really like Rubeskies analysis for you. Your numbers look pretty solid overall. Most of them look pretty close to what the "suggested benchmarks" should be (FWIW, as there should be some room in these benchmarks for different styles of play).

I also agree with Rubeskies and Rory's assessment that you are probably shooting yourself in the foot by being too aggressive on the Flop and turn.

However, I disaggree with Rory about your blind defense. I think your 58% is very good. I like the 50 to 60 range here.

Another thought. I think you maybe a little too tight pf. 20% is on the tight side of the proper spectrum of that 20 to 27 percent zone. However, your 20 percent is really tight when you consider your aggressive (but IMO proper) blind defense.

You normally see people's VPIP jump up a point or two when they start defending their blind a little more liberally, but you are already doing that... so I think you are passing up on some hands that you could be probably takeing the flop with profitably.

However, I would work on lowering your flop & turn aggression a little BEFORE deciding to add any additional hands. If you did this in the reverse order of adding hands before lowering aggression.... the results could easily be bad.

Maybe steal a few more blinds too.

Thanks a lot man, good advice. What kinds of hands do you think I might not be playing that I should? I feel like I'm playing a lot of marginal hands already.

that is actually not an easy question to answer for several reasons. first of all i don't know what you do and dont play and in what situations (when its a close decision). it would be time consuming for an outsider to figure out.

i also realize that this maybe hard for you to figure out. I have gotten vpip up gradually from 20 to 23. guessing, i would say 1.5 % from more liberal blind defense, 1% by playing a few more hands, and .5% from more steal raises (jusy an educated guess on the breakdown of my increase in VPIP). I am hardpressed to see where those 27 percenters get there extra hands from. So I can understand that you may see it as difficult to get from 20 to 23.

I would like to add a disclaimer that my winrate did not go up (but actually went down a little) as my VPIP went up. I am stating this to be truthful. It is impossible to say what role the increase in VPIP had on my winrate, as there are so many variables and such a small sample size. Point here is that getting your VPIP up a point or too is not a cure all, but IMO something to shoot for.

cool. One more thing, how is my SB completion number? Maybe this is factor in my lower VPIP. I've starting completing less frequently just because I am losing money with a lot of hands that I used to complete with (offsuit aces/kings, etc.).

Do not loosen up. 20-21% is perfect. Your major problem is you are too aggressive on the flop and turn-- stop doing that.

Here is a good rule: never make it 3 bets on the turn with just one pair, even if it is an overpair. That should get your aggression down to reasonable levels on the turn. That is why you are not beating the game for 2-3 BB/100, not because you are playing too tight. Playing as aggressive as you do and loosening up will be an absolute disaster.

Don't go crazy anymore unless you have a big draw or top pair on the flop. Never make it 3 bets on the flop without a monster draw or top pair is another good rule that will probably increase your win rate.

Having those hard-set rules will probably get your aggression level to semi-reasonable levels and your win rate will go up.
