If I'm the preflop raiser, which seems to be most of the time I see a flop, my default play is to bet or raise unless I have a specific reason not to. I think I need to get better at finding those...

You should probably value bet this, as you guessed. Most players will call you with an 8, and many will call with a 5 or 6.
