I seem to get myself in trouble with AJ and KJo.....They look sooo pretty but are easily dominated.....

As for QQ, there are only 12 better hands out of approx 1300 starting hands. I will take it...

I would think that cold calling would be fine if you had a drawing type hand with good odds and your fold equity was rather low. Is the book written from a Limit or NL perspective?
