The Montana Face

Passage from Leslie Fielder's 1949 essay.

"Iwas met unexpectedly by the Montana Face. What I had been expecting, I do not clearly know; zest, I suppose; naivete, a ruddy and straightforward king of vigor-perhaps even honest brutality. What I found seemed at first glance, reticent, sullen,weary-full of self-sufficent stupidity;a little later it appeared simply inarticulate, with all the dumb pathos of what cannot declare itself; a face developed not for sociability or for feeling, but for facing into the weather."

I guess now I know why my face is wind burnt.

Does Ray Zee look like this? Does he doctor up his photo's to look so pleasent and aimable? Does he really live in Montana? Have we all fallen into a trap? Inquiring minds want to know.

ray zee has the prettiest face in montana by far. no cracks in my mirror.
yes he lives in montana and hardly leaves anymore as i have gotten used to being around less people and more animals.
the last few months i have been remodling a house, i am going to move to down the road a piece. found a real private spot thats out of this world. some of the animals presently living there. are a moose, pileated woodpeckers, deer, turkeys, bald eagles, blue herons, many ducks, beavers, river otters, owls, a black bear, and lots of smaller creatures i have seen.

Struggled with this. Don't much like to join things.

Had good dry days in both Dec and Jan. Mild winter. Soon skwalla time. I'm really waiting for the BWO. This old goat still likes to test his fading eye sight.

Don't love it too much! Make sure you come to the Bay Area once in a while so I can say hello.
