If you show one person your hand? Do you have to show all?

There were only 2 people at the river, and afterwards they showed their hole cards only to each other but not to the rest of the table. There was no showdown, one of the guys folded.

I thought once you've shown one person you need to show the table, but he said that since it was the only 2 people left in the hand they didn't need to show anyone else.

If they are following standard casino rules, then anyone else can ask and the hands are required to be shown.

I would question why they are trying to hide the hands from everyone else?

I asked him to show the table since he showed the last person in the hand and he complied, but not without remarking, "I can choose to only show the last person in the hand," in a disgusted manner.

Since it was only my second live game, it made me feel like an idiot like people abusing the show hands at showdown for the wrong reason.

Show him this, from Robert's Rules of Poker (on homepokertourneys.com)

From "The Showdown" on page 14:
"5. Any player who has been dealt in may request to see any hand that has been called, even if the opponent's hand or the winning hand has been mucked. However, this is a privilege that may be revoked if abused. If a player other than the pot winner asks to see a hand that has been folded, that hand is dead. If the winning player asks to see a losing player’s hand, both hands are live, and the best hand wins.

6. If you show cards to an active player during a deal, any player at the table has the right to see those exposed cards. Cards shown during or after a deal to a player not in the pot should be shown to all players when the deal is finished."
