Funny Stud hand

We had a few people over for dinner the other day. One chap sees my impressive collection of poker books in my den and starts asking where I play etc. I tell him about the poker rooms in the city and also on the internet. He found it hard to believe that one could play for real dough on the net. So, I log on to Partypoker and tell him that I'll play a few hands to show him. He has never played hold 'em but was familiar with stud. I sit down in a 5-10 stud game to play a few hands (it was a 3 handed game). The last time I played stud was probably 1984 or something.

I get junk the first two hands and fold. Third hand, a 4 brings it in for 2 bucks. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I get rolled up aces. My buddy says "about time you got a hand"...lol

Of course, I just call and the guy behind me folds.

5th street: About the worst thing that can happen happens. My opponent catches a Queen and I get the 4th Ace. Quad rockets on 4th street. Swell.

I had no idea what to do. So, I checked. My opponent was probably laughing his head off at my check but who cares, he can't see the duffus he is playing.

5th street: he gets a King and I get a 3

Check/Check

My buddy, completely ignorant of the concept of slowplaying is shaking his head in disbelief because he thinks that I am checking 'cause I am not very confident of my hand.

6th street: He pairs his doorcard and I get another 3 for 2 pair showing. I finally bet and he folds.

My friend looks at me and says "you stink at this game man, what does it take for you to bet?" and goes back to the living room to regale the others about my lack of card sense.

Quad Aces on 4th street in my 3rd hand of stud in at least 20 years. There must be guys on this board who regularly play stud who have never had quad Aces by 4th street.

Just speaking academically, is there a right way to play this hand in this situation?

Make sure the other guy gets four kings.

there are still people who regularly play stud? honestly I have no idea what to do either there. I probably bet for the hell of it, but what does it matter?

speaking of confusing hands, here's one that I still don't know what to do with. PLO, 8 limpers and I raise the pot out of the blind with AA79 double suited. everyone calls! the flop comes 8 8 8. what now?

I'm pretty sure I've seen a Mason article somewhere describing this. He says to start checking, because even though they may well read you for quads, they still find it very difficult to fold if they make something like a full house.

I treat it as one of the rare poker absolutes to bet open aces on 4th. If someone has a circumstance in which you wouldn't, please enlighten me. Checking quads doesn't cut it because it looks so bad.

I've been playing stud for a little while, and I haven't had quad aces ever in my life.

I had quad queens on fourth street in my home game a few months ago. I decided to bet 'em because, heck, those guys will call with anything. All five opponents folded. I shoulda checked.

In my first session ever in a casino in 1981 (1-3 stud with a 50 cent bring at The Mint downtown (the part of the Horsehoe with the tower which was eventually taken over by Binion's) I get rolled up aces and just call the bring in with about three others. I make quads on 4th street and figure I have to bet with so much upcard strength. All fold so I net $2.

After that I started reading the $1.95 copy of Sklansky's holdem book I had bought at Gambler's Book Club earlier in the weekend. It took me a few years to get back to Las Vegas but my main game was holdem from that point on

I think this only applies if your opponents normally fold to big paired doorcards, as most do. If your opponents are idiots, I think you should bet and hope for the best.
