Hand statistics
I was just reading the book "Diary of a Mad Poker Player" by Richard Sparks. On pg 28, it stated that in a 7-card game, straights actually occur more frequently mathematically than 3 of a kind. The original hand ranking was developed when 5-card was invented, in which the 3 of a kind does indeed happen more than straights.
This is intriguing to me. I can't find anything to back this up. Without actually writing a program or actually doing the math myself, can anyone point me towards any other supporting data? |

To answer your question directly, the statement is incorrect. You will make three of a kind 4.8299% versus making a straight 4.6194%. |
