The Movie \"Sideways\"

The movie "Sideways" has been showing in limited release and is receiving praise from critics and viewers. So much so that it seems likely headed for several Oscar nominations.

In recent years films like this go into wide release after being nominated to capitalize on the buzz.

Questions begging to be asked are; Will this movie have a similar impact on wine drinking as "Rounders" had on poker? Will we have to endure dining companions detailed descriptions of the current bottle at the table? Will Napa and the surrounding areas become even more overrun with tourists?

Napa is already overrun by tourists, enough so that regular visitors know in advance to avoid the main drag (29) through the valley during peak times and take the Silverado Trail when going north/south from Oakville to anyplace instead.

And wine aficion, to plagiarize The Sun Also Rises, (read, snobbishness and price inflation) probably peaked somewhere around the tech/stock bubble.

Finally, I think it's been in wide release for some time.

Sales of pinot noir, at least here in So. Calif., have skyrocketed.

Since it is still only playing in the "art house" where I live I didn't realize that it is in wide release.

Also, I read that US wine consumption increased last year while beer consumption declined slightly.
This may be a result of an aging population. Although I may be wrong, it seems that as drinkers age they tend to drink more wine and spirits and less beer.

Has merlot plummeted, in turn? I feel guilty even looking at a bottle of merlot in the aisle now.

That's great, except that they're probably not going to be relative bargains anymore. C'est la vie.

Anyone else find it odd that he loved Pinot Noir but his cherished bottle was Cheval Blanc?
