FAO Cubswin re UK Attitude to Gambling

Link to a piece in the Daily Mail who unsurprisingly are against the new gambling bill. Tends to be a right wing Tory newspaper but is aimed more at the middle clsses who are possibly going to be the customers for the new super casinos.

Today, the giant American gaming conglomerates - not to mention the Mafia gangsters who have held such sway over gambling in the U.S. - are fairly salivating at the huge profits they can expect under the new Gambling Bill, to be brought before Parliament in the next two weeks, which paves the way for hundreds of mega-casinos across the land.

...and i thought fox news had slanted reporting....geeezzusss

The Daily Mail exists on moral panics and fear.

I haven't actually read all the newspapers in the world, but I would agree with regards to the ones I have read.

Did you hear Melanie Phillips talking about the bill on Radio Four this morning? Suddenly, she has this huge concern for the poor in order to back up her moralism.

I've been thinking about it and I'm not really in favour of the bill, but her arguments were pretty pathetic. State-owned casinos seems like a pretty good idea to me though, provided that there was legislation in place ensuring the money was distributed the less well-off, otherwise it would probably end up as redistribution of wealth the wrong way.

Sky are slating it as well. Its the trouble with it is that people think the worst of everything, for every casino there is going to be an addicted gambler, but is doesnt stop playing slots or the tables being fun (if -ev) its like everything enjoy but not to excess. For every pub there are alcoholics etc etc.

To me reading the bill its looking to modernise the industry as appose to the impression the media is giving that it is deregulation without controls. For us poker players the updating of internet gambling laws within the bill is the most important element.

I haven't actually read the bill, do you have a link? I remember it looking long.

What important stuff is there about internet gambling laws? We still won't have to pay taxes on poker winnings, right?

No no mention of tax.

Basically they will look to make internet gambling legal granting licences for companies looking to run out of the uk. In essence it said that rather than outlaw internet gambling protecting UK citizens was a higher priority. Basicall they are looking to get all the Gibralter lot back into the UK and generate jobs etc by having the UK as the centre of the world's online gambling operations.

Thats the draft bill, the full updated version is out today.

If you buy the daily mail in the supermarket, you'll find it somewhere around the same locations as you guys usually see the national enquirer.

It's a piece of shite as newspapers go, to be diplomatic about it.
