Hot Stamping Chips
 

Can you hot stamp an image onto a clay chip (modern clay, pokerchps.com, James Bond) if the chip was blank? I was wondering if this was even possible and if it was, if the image looks good or if it will hold, etc....

Not a big fan of hot stamping.

Check out The Poker Chip Company. They do images on clay chips. I don't think the others do... only initials in several font options but I'm not positive. One of the 1006 samples I rec'd had an awesome spider graphic hot stamped... looked great w/n rec'd but a month later looked like it had been in a fight... all scratched up, missin' legs etc... My wife seems to have misplaced our digital [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] (I don't think it was me [img]/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]) but if I find it I'll try to post an image. Turned me off big time on HS'ing.

Others may have some old clays that have held the test of time but for me I'll pass. I'd rather go the inexpensive chip route, custom label and save up.

My set of Paulsons is hot stamped and I've been using them for 6-7 years with no noticible ill effects at all. Though if I had known then what I know now, I'dve gone to the extra effort to get custom inserts.

I have a near 15 year old set of hot stamped diamond chips and they have held up well over the years. Many of the letters have faded, but not come off completely.

It does depend on the chip you stamp though. I have a friend that got Deluxe Pyramid chips hot stamped:

He has only had them for about six months and the letters and denoms are already coming off, much worse than my 15 y/o chips.

I play at a club that has some chips about 20 years old. They were stamped when new, and all the stamping is still in place. The chips themselves have actually started falling apart though. Who'da thunk it, that the stamping would outlast the chips?

Even 5star will do a custom die for you, they just have a die charge ($120 I think) then the usual per chip stamping charge will apply ($.16 discounted to $.12 with the 25% coupon). That was for a basic die.

Die charge at ThePokerChip Company was a little less.

One question I do not know is whether your custom die could be outfitted with a slot for denominations / initials so you could leverage the cost of the die over a few orders. Something along the lines of the landmark series...

I did. I bought 'em in two batches, the first (600 chips) I got from Casinocom.com, who there has been much discussion about recently. Even back then they were a bit flakey. They did do the job and for a decent price. At the time there were about a dozen or so blank edge spoted Paulson chips you could get hot stamped (they would not sell them blank). You'd recognize the body of the chips from the various fantasy sets that are out there. You could also get custom inserts put on 'em, which I kick myself every day that I didn't do. Like a lot of folks I wanted the felxibility to change values, which ended up not being the best thing for my game. Anyhow you could get initials or they had some stock dies you could get hotstamped, my chips just have a big "K" on 'em.

The second batch (420 chips) I ordered direct from the Paulson shop in Atlantic City. Back then you could walk right in and buy fantasy sets or order custom jobs. Man those were the days.

I'll post some pictures when I get a chance.

I will say this about Paulsons, I've been using 'em weekly since 1998 and they look absolutely brand new.

Cheap chips are no good for hotstamping. I looked into buying a hot stamping machine because a friend was importing dice chips. They are too hard for most dies. Older (or better) chips take the stamp very well.
BTW, $120 for a die is rediculous. I had some made for $CDN40 each.

Try http://acehighsupply.com/customchips.php for custom printing. It's similar to hot stamping, yet it's faster, and there's no dye charge or any art fees. The downside is they can only print on abs chips right now though they do have an original chip that's pretty cool.
