celeron vs pentium
 

I'm thinking of buying a cheap (dell) celeron laptop to play poker online at free wifi spots when I'm on the road. Any advice out there on what I'm giving up by not going pentium?

Pentiums are better, but with a Celeron you should be fine.

You would notice a difference in gaming, or something like Photoshop. Pretty much anything CPU intensive, but for regular usage you should be fine.

Some people here are saying the celeron is fine. I would disagree. I've noticed celerons causing massive slowdowns and lag in things like opening IE windows and performing basic tasks within the OS. Celeron's are missing cache which is one of the most important parts of the processor.

I have seen many people buy celerons in the past only to blame their lack of performance on other things. In my opinion the biggest mistake you can make is to buy a celeron. This is especially true if you want to run PT. Database apps require a lot of memory access and Cache speeds that up.

Intel is also discontinuing the celeron at the end of this year.

It may work out. The newer celerons can't be as bad as they once were but I would not have high expectations.

you qualify as one of those here that seem to know tech stuff.

i grabbed this laptop yesterday for my neice but am thinking of keeping it for a back up to my laptop and getting here a better machine. i've already made the purchase, and there was not much that i could customize, but can you tell me if i am better off giving it to her for college stuff, or if i should keep it for poker stuff. also, it seemed like the price was good, do you agree? my intentions are for her to have a reliable machine that will last her a few years. if this is a piece of crap, i'll keep it and get her a better one.

Granny,

I know you didn't ask for my advice, but:

Celerons are fine for normal usage. You'll want to add another 256MB of RAM to it (buy that over the web, it's much cheaper than in a store or from Dell). (Also double check to make sure that you can install another 256MB RAM module.)

I wouldn't want to play a graphics intensive game on that laptop, but there shouldn't be a problem for using it to write papers and surf the web. We had a Celeron in our office and it worked perfectly well. People would bag on it for being slow, but you could give someone a top of the line computer and in a month they'll be complaining how slow it is.

thanks jmark. i was wondering why nobody would answer me. i just re-read my post and it was written as a request to ct11 only and that's not what i meant. any and all input is welcome.

i wanted to make sure this was not garbage before i gave it to a freshman that will use it heavily. however, she will probably only use it as a word processor anyway. the price was low, and that scared me a bit. seems like it would be fine from what you say. i'll get her a gift certificate for the RAM. i specifically asked if it was upgradable and dell-man said yes to 512.

Are you sure about that? After all she has "Granny" Blood running through her veins. Get her the Full Pentium...makes it a lot eaiser to play 12 tables at once.
