Hand statistics

I was just reading the book "Diary of a Mad Poker Player" by Richard Sparks. On pg 28, it stated that in a 7-card game, straights actually occur more frequently mathematically than 3 of a kind. The original hand ranking was developed when 5-card was invented, in which the 3 of a kind does indeed happen more than straights.

This is intriguing to me. I can't find anything to back this up. Without actually writing a program or actually doing the math myself, can anyone point me towards any other supporting data?

Try the Wizard of Odds

To answer your question directly, the statement is incorrect. You will make three of a kind 4.8299% versus making a straight 4.6194%.
