Over 50 Forum
I think it's called for. Andy will moderate--and he may let in a few honorary 50 year olds. Motto: "Don't trust anyone under 50."

Re: Over 50 Forum
I'm IN !
Bought my first poker book in '62. If only I could remember what it was and where it is. |
Re: Over 50 Forum
That is an excellent idea. I'm all for it. Mason should also agree. He's like, almost, you know - 60

Re: Over 50 Forum
Funny idea, but i would change the motto to "What did he say?".

Few women will admit to being over fifty Otherwise I'm in of course ~ Rick |
Re: Over 50 Forum
You need an entrance exam.
Like, maybe you could ask: What is a typewriter? What does it mean when you say a television show or movie is in "black and white"? What is the Geneva convention, and how many times a year is it held? You could have some multiple choice questions, too. "Rock and roll" is: A) The name of a band selling CD's on late night infomercials B) A term used in the armed forces that means you should start fighting or driving C) A flavor of ice cream D) None of the above. |
Re: Over 50 Forum
Good idea. I'd probably apply for membership since most everyone I enjoy talking to in the OT forums is over 50. And believe me, I'm crotchety enough.

Re: Over 50 Forum
If you're over 50, you've likely had the "entrance exam." And if you're over 50, you know what I mean.
I'm in. My first book was "Win at Poker," by Jeff Rubens, bought in hardback in 1968. I wish I understood it as well then as I do now. Would have saved me a lot of money and a whole bunch of discouragement. |

I'm only 35, but would lobby for inclusion. I feel light years older than the kids around here nowadays.

Re: Over 50 Forum
Good point! Goes to show how old I am--that kind of distinction generally doesn't occur to me right off. But, "exit" exam? Carries a connotation that is getting a lot closer at this age. So let's enjoy it while we can!

Heheh, not bad.
Hey, you're not Abe Simpson are you? I had no idea the retirement home had internet. |
Re: Over 50 Forum
Great idea. Entrance exam would be a detailed essay on what you were doing when Kennedy was shot. As an alternative, you may answer the question, "Will there ever be a day when we don't have Dick Nixon to kick around any more?"

Re: Over 50 Forum
As long as you don't have to diagram sentences. For the life of me I can't remember how. I just remember doing them over and over again.

Re: Over 50 Forum
Wow John. I never thought you be for discrimination.

Some Suggestions
1) We call it the "Champions' Forum," like they do on the golf tour.
2) You'll need to prove you're over fifty to participate. We don't want the young 'uns criticizing our ancient ways. The good news is we get Sklansky, Malmuth, and Zee. 3) We can form an association, and try to get discounts on things (like tournament entry fees), like AARP does. 4) All B&M cardrooms should have seniors parking spots, right next to the handicapped spots, close to the entrances and exits. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is such a good idea that it probably has no chance of happening. Discounts I don't care about, I don't buy much. But guaranteed VIP parking is fantastic and IMO would attract customers. ~ Rick |
Re: Some Suggestions
My 14-year old is constantly harping on me to look for a closer parking spot. Man, I'm an AARP member with a bad back and leg and he can't walk as far as I can?

I thought you had to be 55? ~ Rick PS If we get the "Over 50" forum I'd like to start a thread titled "Where do you get the best packaged or canned prunes?". The packaged ones I just got from Trader Joe's tasted darn good and the supermarket prunes my Father gave me earlier this year when I visited sure did the trick. I need a trick before tomorrow :. |
Re: Some Suggestions
Fortunately I'm not in need of prunes yet. But if you could find a deal on glucosamine ...

Modest suggestions
Since we all lived through the 60's, instead of "calling for" an over 50 forum, we should issue a "non-negotiable demand."
If that doesn't work, we could fall back on an ADA suit. Surely being over 50 qualifies as a disability. I'd call my lawyer if I could remember his name....nice kid in his 40's....maybe my wife knows. Power to the People |

Re: Some Suggestions
I recently purchased some new glasses - and the gal selling them noted that I was 'over 50' and asked if I belonged to AARP. I said no, but she gave me the AARP discount anyway. She felt sorry for me because I had to wait a few days for my glasses, as they had to order special blanks to grind my new lenses (extra thick progressives, stigmatism in one eye etc). Being 'old' felt good, for a moment anyway.
So what's the action for this over 50 Forum? I am tired of wading through posts and don't have the time on my downhill slide through the latter days of a misused life to put up with the young buck swagger and deluge of drivel that is more and more the norm of the 2+2 forums. Do I send a copy of my birth certificate or passport to Mason? -Zeno |
Re: Over 50 Forum
Joe, I never thought you be for Ebonics.
I meant age-discrimination, disgusting. |
Re: Over 50 Forum
Joe,
I knew you meant age discrimination, and no other sort of discrimination entered my mind. I was trying to have fun with the missing "would" in your post, and I hoped the smiley face would make that evident. I didn't mean to imply anything else. In fact, as an English teacher and student of language, I may be one of the few people here who sees Ebonics as a language with rules and a grammar. Sorry that you misunderstood. |
Re: Over 50 Forum
I read somewhere that the "I be, you be" construction originated in Southwestern England, where many settlers of tidewater Virginia originated in the 17th century. I just assumed Joe was a time traveler from that time and place.
