So I'm off to Vegas tomorrow with a couple of 2+2 friends. We're booked for two nights at the Horseshoe. Now, since it's a long weekend I'm expecting it to be extremely crowded. Thus, I'd like to avoid the strip if possible.

I'm a low limit player, and I know there are good low limit games at the Mirage, Luxor, Excalibur, and Sahara. That said, I really don't know what's being spread at the Horseshoe, or any other downtown or off-strip casino. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks.

You won't have any problem finding $2-$4 - $4-$8 around downtown, I don't think. If you want to go even farther off the strip, check out the Station casinos; most of them spread $2-$4, $3-$6-$9 and $4-$8.

Try Binion's. I have not been there since it re-opened as a harrah's operation, but I hear it's still good. Also, downtown rooms are cheaper than the strip. Try Golden Nugget.

The Orleans is a large, non-smoking room that spreads 2-4, 4-8 and higher. There is a Subway shop inside of the casino directly opposite the poker room, where after approx. 4-6 hours of play you will have earned enough to get a free meal.

I found the 2-4 players to be as loose and clueless as those found in any other 2-4 poker room. Although the regulars all seemed to know each, they were friendly to me and in general seemed to be having a good time. In fact, I enjoyed playing with the Orleans regulars much more than the with the drunks and angleshooters I encoutered at the Monte Carlo.

I went by Texas Station on Sunday. The lowest game they had going was a 4/8 kill game.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up playing mostly at Binions (as I was staying there). It was excellent. Great room, horrible players, decent dealers. Played about 10 hours there overall and ended up + $120. The only problem was that around 4am, the table was full of drunks (one drunk lady in particular) and it slowed to a crawl. It was probably as bad as 20 hands/hour. I also had no problem getting $6 meal comps for me and my friends. I didn't even have to check in before I started. You just have to ask when you're done. It was nice that after 11pm, $6 was good for a very decent steak and eggs dinner/breakfast.

I checked out the Nugget and the room did look very nice, but I never sat down. I was over at the Luxor and played for about 5 hours, but ran into a table full of tight-passive regulars and couldn't get paid off. Lost $100 there. Eh, what can ya do?

Anyway, I definitely want to check out the Nugget and Orleans next time I go. The Palms also sounds nice if it can be considered off the strip. In the end though, I highly recommend the Horseshoe to anyone staying downtown.

I stayed at Binion's over the last weekend too. The poker room was great, and the times I played there was great action. I hope you checked their website before you booked your room and found the discounted prices. The rooms were adequate but not fancy, but definately worth the extremely low prices I paid for them.

Plus the coffe shop downstairs can't be beat for good, cheap breakfasts after 11pm.

When and what did you play? Maybe I saw you there. I was cruising the micro-limit circuit at 2/4. I played at Binions Saturday from about 7pm to Midnight, and Sunday from 11pm to 5am.
