Should I have played the flop this this way with the paired board?

Given your position relative to the bettor, just call on the flop. You don't want to drive people out here. Also, the paired board shouldn't really affect your decision in this case. You have no reason to suspect a boat.

but you shouldn't be raising the flop there. calling the bet is fine.

yes i know, but hero was also concerned about the paired board which he shouldn't.
