Has anyone stayed there? How are the rooms and the food?

Also I see that they have low limit poker..exactly what games do they spread? And how are the NLHE tourneys?

Thanks.

they have 10 tables and spread 2-4 and 1-4-8-8 holdem and they have a 40$ buy in (with a 20$ rebuy) tournament at 7pm on mon weds and sat.
the food is decent but never got a room there. They do have a poker rate for the room. the poker room itsself is kind of cramped

Highlife, I would run not walk to a different hotel. The rooms are quite dingy and in need of updating, the hotel has no guest laundry service, and don't even get me started on the buffet. We were just there the beginning of the month and I would never stay there again.

As for the poker it had to be some of the worst play I have ever witnessed in Vegas. It is all LL but the play was such that it made a .50/1 party table look tight and sane.

i played 2/4 there this weekend, insanely soft games...
they were spreading 2/4, 4/8 and 1-5 stud...they allow smoking in the poker room also...

I stayed there at the end of April. Paid $45 a night through Expedia.com. The monorail also has a stop there now, so easy transport to the strip. The rooms were standard hotel rooms. Nothing fancy, just a bed to sleep in. It was clean, so that's all I care about. The poker room is pretty small. They had 2-4 and 4-8 when I was there. They have NL tourneys on I believe Sun, Mon, Wed. The competition was terrible. You can hack out a win there if you get the cards. Just don't pull an all nighter with only Coffee, Bailey's, and Nicotine pumping through your system like I did. It's bad for the bankroll /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I stayed there a few months back. Rooms are nothing spectacular. Just a place to sleep. So, if you are looking for luxury or more than the bare basics in a room, look elsewhere. The room was soft, I was up about $75 in 2-3 hours of play at the 2-4. Did not play in the tourney though.

I only at at a Mexican Cantina type restaurant they have right off of the casino. Pretty good food and fairly inexpensive. In fact, the last time in vegas we stayed at the Strat and had dinner at this place as it was pretty good.

Hope this helps.

What's wrong with playing with a bunch of people who have no clue? Would you rather play in a tight/aggressive LL game with a bunch of 2+2'rs? /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I would agree about the buffet. It's cheap, but try at your own risk. Last time we went, one of my friends got sick shortly after. Fun...

If you plan on playing a bunch down there, then it's probably worth trying it out one time. The Sahara is (in)famous for it's $1 craps and BJ games.

This is my take on the Sahara. It is only my own experience and opinion, but I have played there hundreds of sessions, so there ya go.

My favorite cardroom is the Sahara. Fred is a well known and respected poker room manager all over Nevada. He opened Excalibur, Buffalo Bills, and the Colorado Belle, among many others. He runs a tight ship. Abuse is not tolerated (if reported...you have to speak up). He makes sure his floormen are very helpful and friendly to new players and women. Their tourneys are well run and even though the juice is high, if you calculate the prize pool, it is always 100% correct. There is no stealing going on.

Like all cardrooms, Sahara has it's problems. They attract a young, wild crowd due to the $1 blackjack and many other things. But they are always trying their best, and will keep up on things if you point out that there is some problem (players cursing, throwing cards, abusing other players/dealers, etc).

I believe Sahara ties for the lowest rake in town. I haven't played there since November 2003, so don't quote me on that one, but they were tied with the El Cortez, I think.

Sahara has a very good NLHE game. They also spread three NLHE tourneys per week. You can still call ahead for advanced registration, which is a plus, and becoming very rare.

Comps are easy to get, and the coffee shop has decent food, if very slow service.

The buffet is horrible, one of the worst in town. We used to get buffet comps every day when we played blackjack, and we would go outside and give them away to the homeless people who hung around that area.

The steak restaurant is excellent. Top notch quality and service.

The rooms are just standard. They rate like the rooms of a typical motel chain across the country. I have never had a dirty room, though, so that is a plus.

i would concur with felicia on her report. although, i'm a youngish fellow (ok, starting to get old, since i hit 30, but i still hang in the younger crowd), and usually hang out in divey bars, this is kind of a divey casino. it attracts young folk, but more down to earth young folk, unlike the hardrock crowd.

the low limits there has some of the worst players i have ever seen. mostly young kids.

personally i like it. the rooms are no frills, but the room i stayed in was clean, and i don't spend much time in the room.

the monorail will help explore the strip too. i like hitting a number of card rooms in vegas if i can, just so it feels like i'm moving around the town.

good luck

My main jist was on the hotel, it sucks. The card room on the other hand is a decent LL players paridise. I would make the trip to play the room if I was inclined to play 2/4, just never stay there. BTW they also spread a NL game on the tourney nights.

I haven't stayed at the Sahara since they increased their room rates. I started playing there when they had single hand $5 blackjack. They used to also have a good number of $1 blackjack tables which we loved, but lately it's almost non-existent. It used to be $30/night on weekdays I believe. The rooms are clean and functional, much better than staying at Motel 6. The poker room brush is very nice and convinced me to start my poker career at the 1-4-8-8. I haven't played poker there since they started 2-4, but I watched one of their tables for a couple minutes and had to leave before I started laughing out loud.

Now that they increased their room rates to $40 we're going to try staying at the Excalibur next week for $45 to get some variety.

There is also a club, the beach, nearby to the Sahara. We used to go when I lived there, it's kind of a spring-break type club. Also if you get bored, you can go to Wet-N-Wild to cool off or run to slots-a-fun to get the 5 pound hot dog for 12 cents. There's also a Bank of America a few blocks down Sahara which is key. But it's not center strip so don't expect to be right in the middle of the action.

A five pound hot dog for twelve cents? Could you elaborate? That sounds disgusting, although I am home sick today with a stomach virus, but whats the deal with that?!
