View Full Version : In Need of Desperate Help!!!

I've been reading a lot of posts here over the past few weeks and have improved my game dramatically, but I think I still have some leaks that need fixing. In the last 2000 hands approx, I was up slightly over 20BB/100 hands, which I know is a little too high to be sustainable, although I figure 10BB/100 is a reasonable goal for me at $25NL.

Tonight, was my worst night in over 3 months, as I lost 170BB in 450 hands. Below, I have included a bunch of hands that I'm not sure I played correctly. So far, in analyzing my own game, I've come to the conlusion that my play is very good when leading or ahead in terms of betting and being able to lay down good hands that are beat, but I am very weak when it comes to playing when I'm behind and having to call bets. I could really, really use you guys help on these hands where I'm usually behind...THANKS!!

I got about a third of the way through these hands and didn't notice anything about your play that was extremely problematic. I didn't agree with all of your plays wholeheartedly but I don't think anyone's going to call you a fish. Dropping 170BB in one night is far from extraordinary. A couple of bad beats combined with getting into situations like having KK vs. AA can easily put you down this amount without any major errors is playing style.

Generally, I don't think it's a good idea to post a laundry list of hands. People really don't have the time or patience to go through and comment on them all and will most likely, as I did, give up a fraction of the way through. I think you're good enough to tell which hands need discussion and comments and which don't. For instance, the hand in which you flop a set, bet the pot on every street, then get sucked out on on the river is really not interesting. Do you think you should have pushed the flop? Check-folded on the end expecting an odd-ball straight? Post interesting hands one at a time and you'll get a lot more feedback.

Break the posts down into seperates, Jeez i need a four page essay to respond to all the things I see with those hands. I know you're upset with dropping 170BB, but thats reall a drop in the bucket.

Drop 400 in a night and then I'll give you a shoulder to cry on.

I can respond to maybe like three at a time, but I cant respond to like 8 hands at a clip.

Ok, I know I keep saying push, but it's mainly due to the stack sizes. Push the flop. You are ahead of overcards, and if there is an overpair, you are drawing to 10 outs or running clubs if he doesn't have one. Again, I think a lot of these "push" comments are due to the shallow stack sizes.

on the hand where you had a /images/graemlins/heart.gif 5 /images/graemlins/heart.gif for a pair and the nut flush draw, you'd really like to be all-in on the flop, especially since you're out of position (well, until the SB knocks out the field, anyway). i would either bet the flop hoping to 3-bet all-in, or once you've checked and it's check-raised by the SB, then push all-in. you've got 9 outs to the nuts plus 5 more to big hands - get the $ in.

and yes, post more interesting hands.

MasterShakes

Hand #1
Preflop - Fine, would have played it the same.
Flop and turn are both fine IMO - I think you played this whole hand alright.

Hand #2
This is just unfortunate. I had similar outdraws happen to me several times this weekend and still ended up winning. Don't let these hands get you down.

Hand #3
Preflop is fine, given the numerous EP callers - I can't believe that many people got in there.
However, given that they did get in there, it's tough not to put at least a few of them on a pocket pair. If this is me, I suspect a set on the flop and have a lot of trouble drawing to this flush.

Hand #4
I have no problem with the preflop raise or the apparent attempted steal on the flop, but why keep firing on the turn? I know it might be weak to give up on this pot, but we're not talking about a NL game with tough reputations - this is Party NL and profitable situations come up all the time. Why waste your time with something like this? You're lucky he was apparently on a draw.

Hand #5
I would have trouble limping with a suited ace in EP. Even in these games, I think you need position to play these hands. From the flop on, I can't say that I would have played it differently, but this hand should demonstrate the difficulty of playing AXs out of position.

Hand #6
Calling the raise was probably ok because if you flop your set, you're likely getting his stack with that big of a raise. On the flop, you likely have 10 outs. Despite this, I have trouble continuing play. There's no reason to put your stack in jeopardy in this situation. Like I said earlier, easier situations come up all the time. No need to waste your time on this.

Hand #7
A re-raise at this limit usually indicates at least QQ. Tighter players won't even re-raise with that - they just call and hope to hit their set. Some looser players will re-raise with JJ, TT, AK and even AQ. If that Q isn't there, I probably agree with the flop push. With it there, you're behind to all of the hands I could put this player on, and you might be as good as a split up against another AK.

Hand #8
This looks standard to me. The raiser was probably on AK or AQ and he'd likely let you know if he had better.

Hand #9
Another AXs out of position. This could have been a lot harder on you, but I agree with your flop call. The check and call on the turn will look suspicious. If you come out betting when the flush card comes, some players will look at this as suspicious in the other direction (i.e., put you on a flush bluff) and I think this will typically get you more action. At least check raise the turn. Always come out betting on the river. I thought playing the turn slow was because you feared a set pairing the board on the river. No need to get greedy.

Hand #10
Be willing to get in with KK every single time except for exceedingly rare situations. A situation like this would be that you know the player you are up against is tight and doesn't like to get all-in except on AA or KK (like me). If you had bigger stacks and you had each other covered, then getting all-in with KK MIGHT be tough. However, don't beat yourself up over running into AA here. I've gotten all-in with KK against what were incomprehensible all-in bets to me. Even when you do run into AA, you will win 1 in 5 times.

Overall, your play looks pretty good and your win rate is apparently healthy. Keep playing a lot. Start paying attention to position more on your drawing hands. I don't see that playing these AXs hands in EP or MP is profitable. I only play them in the last three seats and even then only if I'm up against limpers in unraised pots. Not only is it better to draw with position than without - you also get lots of steal opportunities on the flop with these hands when the action is checked to you.

I liked how you played most of these. Only exception was the 88 hand where i fold preflop and push allin on turn.

These were mostly hands where you made money, not lost it.

I started my first 1000 hands at Party 25NL at ~25BB/hr. After a bad patch, I'm now around 5BB/hr after 2500 hands. It happens.

Focus more on your decisions, and less on the outcome.

Yeah, i say that now, but after watching my bankroll get cut in half from 30-3 multis i can tell you i cursed a storm and switched back to 20-2 SNGs --so try a change of pace.
