View Full Version : 'cool' movies

Looking through my DVD collection, I realized that I really like 'cool' movies. What is a 'cool' movie? It's a movie where cool/interesting people do cool/interesting things. Examples of 'cool' movies I have seen or are in my collection:

Ocean's 11 (not the original one)
Poolhall Junkies
Rounders (duh)
Equilibrium
Sneakers
Tao Of Steve
Catch Me If You Can
Roger Dodger
Confidence
Italian Job

I'm sure I left a few off, but those are the ones I can see on my DVD rack... what are some other 'cool' movies that you'd recommend?

Some that come to mind.

First and foremost, Swingers.

Made.

Lock, Stock, of course.

Heat.

Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

Boondock Saints.

Go.

Three Kings.

Out of Sight.

King of New York.

Escape from New York.

Drugstore Cowboy.

A ton of mob flicks.

Haven't even started to think about older films. Many qualify.

Taxi Driver.

OK, I just thought it was "cool" when Travis takes Betsy to the porno movie on their first date (disgusting Betsy) and then gives himself a mowhawk, stalks a presidential candidate, kills a pimp, saves a little prostitute, and then quietly COOLLY blows Betsy off at the end.

Now, how cool is THAT??

OK. I guess that's not really what you meant.

"His gun is a f*cking starter pistol! I can see the red plug in your f*cking barrel!"

elwoodblues

Fargo is without a doubt cool. Unforgiven is meant to be anti-cool (isn't that the whole point of the movie --- the de-glamorization of the wild west). Paradoxically, that's what's cool about it.

Here's a few I haven't seen mentioned:

Point Break
Blow
Beyond The Law
Gross Point Blank

I might get some heat for suggesting Gross Point Blank because it's a comedy, but I think it was exceptionally well done and it was a different take on the whole hit man schtick that's been done a million times in Hollywood.

I doubt you'll get heat for Grosse Point Blank --- great movie. You might get heat for the other movie on your list with Point in the title.

Point Break has three strikes against it: Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, and Gary Busey

Blues Brothers - nobody is cooler than Jake and Elwood

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Usual Suspects - already mentioned

Miller's Crossing

Glengarry Glen Ross - and other Mamet works

The Untouchables - Mamet deserves two specifically mentioned in the category of cool movies

Tombstone - Val Kilmer was so cool even though Kurt Russell wore way too much eye make-up in the movie

Lots of snow.

For me, Fargo succeeded because it took characters, situations, and dialog that were uncool and wove them together in a movie that, as a whole, was cool. Lesser movies would have made the kidnappers cool. Lesser movies wouldn't have had Frances McDormand's character be pregnant (or female for that matter). Lesser movies wouldn't have had the whole scene with the asian man with the Minnesota accent hitting on the cop. The fact that Fargo did all these things makes it a cool movie.

astroglide

I cannot believe I did not know that David Mamet wrote The Untouchables.

I think maybe the reason I did not know this is because I absolutely loathe the movie. I think it's about as maudlin and syrupy as anyone could ever hope to make a movie about such a topic. DePalma has the heaviest director's hand on record, and I can't stand most of his stuff, particularly The Untouchables.

That said, I cannot believe David Mamet wrote it. I'm stupefied. ("You're not from Chicago." "What are you prepared to do?!" "No, not THIS man!", etc.)

Only good line:

"He's in the car."

Kilmer carries the entire movie. Tombstone is much better than Wyatt Earp starring Costner (although Quaid does a good job as Holliday in WE, he just can't compare to Kilmer in Tombstone).

elwoodblues

Keven Costner sucks rocks, but the movie is still enjoyable because Sean Connery's character was so "cool" in that movie.

Another great line in the movie is (could be slightly off, it's from memory):

Reporter: Mister Ness, word is they're going to repeal prohibition. What will you do then?
Ness: I think I'll have a drink.

Ummm, if you don't get how "cool" Fargo is, then you ain't cool enough to understand....

Just kidding, I misunderstood the thread and was referring to generically "cool" movies, which explains both Fargo and Strictly Ballroom.

BTW, if any of you have not seen Strictly Ballroom, really, you must, it's a foookin gem.

Clint is "cool" in any and all cases. If he ain't "cool" in Unforgiven, then "cool" ain't "cool"...the last scene, c'mon, who is cooler than that?

You can count on me, also awesome, also not particularly "cool", oops.

His Girl Friday, the coolest.

Deer Hunter, well, "cool" is a bit of a simplification.

Hmmmm, "cool" huh, let me think.

All things Bruce Lee and Clint Eastwood.
James Bond, pretty damn "cool"...

Sheesh, movies are made to be cool 75% of the time, so many movies are "cool" like this, Rollerball for example, hella cool.

Anyway, rambling, back to another sorry Monday in the office...

Edit: Double props for Donnie Darko, that's one "cool" kid.

Cool "people", cool story, cool fights.

Cool.

On that note, from my interpretation of what the original poster thought was a "cool" movie, I think 90% of the posts are about great movies, but not his idea of "cool" movies.

Can we establish criteria?

How about:

A fight.
Something everyone wishes they could do but are incapable of doing.
A competition of some kind.
A classic rock/jazz soundtrack

Pool Hall Junkies? I kinda like the movie, but cool? Maybe the chicks were cool, but overall....? In the pool genre somebody mentioned Color of Money. This doesn't get it either. Cool in a pool movie is George C.Scott and Jackie Gleason in The Hustler. Period. Fast Eddie not so cool. He was all weepy. And nothing is cooler than Gleason in his suit playing pool. PHJ? Bar table 8 ball on those weird tables that have those snooker type pockets. Not cool. Color of Money. Tom Cruise, not cool. Eddie, not cool again. Coolest guy in the movie was clearly McCready. He was hilarious and not even acting. Too bad he had to lose to punk ass Cruise. I take it back, Forrest Whitaker's character was cool too. Cooler than McCready, but McCready not really fiction.

Cool now? Kill Bill. Uma getting a special yellow outfit, yellow shoes, yellow motorcycle and helmet and taking her custom sword to a place to kill 3987 people. Cool. "Leave your limbs. They are mine now." or whatever the exact line is. That's cool. PHJ - not so cool.

Scorsese is the embodiment of cool. Tom Cruise wearing that black t-shirt with his name on it, waving around a pool cue, and slowly tilting away any chance he has to make any real money while Eddie silently takes it all in, that scene is as cool as it gets.

Anyone can create the perfect character, one that retains all composure under pressure, that makes every shot or wins every hand. This is not what makes a movie cool (if it was, we'd all be jerking off to Maverick instead of Rounders). It's flawed characters like Vincent and Eddie, (or Worm and Mike), that make a movie what it is.

BTW, the only cool thing about Pool Hall Junkies was the fact that the main character had the same haircut as Christopher Walken, maybe the only other person on the planet that can say that, and yet they weren't related.

Twirling around what is supposed to be a Balabushka, even if it is a cheapass production Joss, is the antithesis of cool. Tom Cruise was not cool in that scene or the movie. The owner of the Chicago poolroom in that scene was, however, cool.

Flawed characters are good. Like George C Scott and Jackie Gleason in The Hustler. They were cool. Cruise wasn't. All of Tarantino's flawed characters are cool.

You're missing the point, both of my post and of Scorsese's intention. You're talking about the character while I was talking about the scene.

Watch some of the deleted scenes in Pulp Fiction, when Uma Thurmand is video-taping Vincent after they get home from the dance contest, which we see as a black and white, Sex Lies and Videotape type shot. Momento.

This is a seriously cool movie. Its about a guy who only has 24 hours worth of memory, every 24 hours his memory just gets wiped due to an accident that happened during the murder of his wife. The story involves him trying to find hte killer of his wife. His body is covered in tatoos to remind him of who he is and clues he has discovered upto then. He also has tons of polaroids with notes writen on them.

To make the film even better the story line runs from the end to the begining. It has tons of twists and its the sort of film you get to smugly explain to your friends who didnt quite manage to follow it all the way through.

An absolute must see.

The Score with DeNiro and Norton is a very cool movie.

Awful. Sure the violence was good. However, the "acting" was so absolutely terrible it made it unwatchable.

I am interested in reading the book (I've heard it's actually pretty good).

I think that's part of the point. It's deliberately ridiculous. I thought it was pretty good.

I get the whole "so bad it's good" idea, but Starship Troopers was so bad it's bad.

So bad it's good:
Re-animator
Evil Dead movies
The Toxic Avenger

I don't see it as a "so bad it's good" film. It's supposed to be silly - the handsome but terrioble actors, the terrible dialogue, the absurd violence- they're all deliberate IMO, and fit in with the silly commercials etc as part of the film's attempt to satirise fascistic popular culture (or something). "So bad it's good" for me means Ed Wood type catastrophes. End of Days was almost so bad it was good (but not quite, meaning it was awful).

Yea but thats the coolest line from a cool film.

Could you know less?

Exactly.

That is what makes this film a masterpeice and one of my all time favourites.

The directors hand is at once so obvious yet subtle in its attempt to create a peice of perfect commercial trash, yet at the same time exalting in high self parody and self refrence. It is the most "knowing" film I have ever seen.

Also brillaint is the completeness off the film. It achieves its purpose to the letter and leaves nothing unfulfiled or to spare.

P.S. I'm not saying Starship Troopers is bad. I just don't think it belongs on the "cool" movie thread given the original poster's remarks. Obviously, you do, which is why you are some sort of big, fat, smart-bug, aren't you?

Pulp fiction
Road to Perdition
Leon
Run Lola Run
The game
Benny & Joon (ok, a very nice but not really a "cool" movie, but Jhonny Depp is extremly cool in that film. No action hero of course, but nevertheless cool)
Kill Bill
