I would be a lot more aggressive on the flop, your bet was wayyy too low.

This is definitely not a smart play. With 8 players seeing the flop, your weak bet is pricing in all sorts of hands. Same thing goes for the turn bet.

i would check the river and hope for a free/cheap showdown.

I have to agree with the others. Your bet on the flop was way too low and was inviting trouble. A pot sized bet or larger would have been appropriate.

You flopped top pair and a flush draw...You need to bet at least the pot on the flop. And I definitely dont understandt he bet at the end, what did you think that guy had? Did you think he was going to fold to that bet??? I guess one good thing came out of it, you realized you were dealing with a calling station who will call down the whole way with a pair and a shitty kick with a straight draw on board.

So should the river bet have been larger? none at all? He was calling all my bets but I still wanted to be somewhat careful since the hand wasn't great.

I definitely would have checked the river. I wouldn't want to raise and be re raised because I'd have to release the hand, but if he made a rather small bet you could call it just to see what he had. In this case, I'm pretty sure the guy would have checked right behind you and it would have been free.

You played this very poorly.

I check-raise the flop all-in if someone makes a pot bet. The likelihood of it checking through is tiny, so I definitely look for the check raise here. You made a pointless bet and got lucky. This is not good poker.

On a rag board, you have TP and a low flush draw. That's at least decent against every other hand heads-up, since you either have a better made hand or a good draw. However, you could be dead in a 3-way pot: You might be up against a higher flush draw and a better made hand. If so, you need to get one of them to fold so that you have a chance to win. If they are out there, and you can't get either to fold, then your hand is just pretty garbage.

Betting 1/3 of the pot doesn't accomplish anything. Make a larger bet or check-fold or check-raise. I like check-raising all-in here as long as the raise is at least pot-sized. Better made hands will often fold, and if you are called, you have outs.
