I thought if we all listed our favourite or most-visited non-poker website we might all find some new interesting stuff. Some of mine are:

The Onion (http://www.theonion.com)
I guess everyone knows this one.

Open Democracy (http://www.opendemocracy.net) I've plugged this several times before; a lot of in-depth articles on hot political and economic topics by experts in their field; slightly-left leaning. Good forums; pretty serious though.

The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk) Best UK newspaper site

Al Jazeera English Language Site (http://english.aljazeera.net) /images/graemlins/blush.gif Some articles, especially on Israel, to be taken with a pinch of salt, but generally good for Middle Eastern news not covered in as much detail in the Western press.

Al Ahram (http://weekly.ahram.org.eg) English language Egyptian weekly - Arab perspective on a range of Middle Eastern issues. Mostly comment and analysis rather than news. Some writers v biased, but Graham Usher v good on Israel (also writes for The Economist).

The Economist (http://www.economist.com) I'm a subscriber; well worth it IMO

Slate (http://www.slate.com) - most of you know this. SOme good articles, some not-so-good. The cartoon Index is great.

Unofficial Paul krugman Archive (http://www.pkarchive.org) - Archived articles by the economist/NYT Columnist.

Google News (http://news.google.com) Great resource

Robbs Celebs (http://www.robbscelebs.co.uk) Everyone likes free nude celeb pics, right?

Surely the Economist and Slate don't count as left-wing, especially not the former? As I siad, I mainly like Slate for the cartoons and other round-ups. It's main writer on Arab affairs is awful IMO. Anwyway if that's your POV post some of your favoured antidotes. Try and enter into the spirit of things.

InPassing (http://www.inpassing.org): It's funnier if you've lived in Berkeley.

Get Your War On (http://www.mnftiu.cc/mnftiu.cc/war.html)

KCRW (http://www.kcrw.org): Great music.

Besides some obvious ones:

http://www.valueforum.com

The best discussion of income stocks and to a lesser degree the bond market that I know of. I've learned more than I thought I'd ever know about the energy business as well. It's a subscription site but well worth the money. The posters x_stock, bond_dadddy, and captainlate are must reads.

I still laugh when I read it. I met the guy who does it--he's a local artist. Totally different from what you would expect him to look/act like.

Twinkies Project (http://www.twinkiesproject.com/)

Virtual Bubble Wrap (http://www.virtual-bubblewrap.com/popnow.shtml)

Great Directors (http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/directors/)

American Studies (http://xroads.virginia.edu/)
A great site with various hypertexts and special exhibitions. Check out the famous Armory Show of 1913.

Voice of the Shuttle (http://vos.ucsb.edu/)
One of the earliest literature (of all kinds) sites, and probably the best.

Bartleby (http://bartleby.com/)
Free books online, including encyclopedias and Elements of Style.

American Memory (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/finder.html)
An outstanding collection of maps, photos, early silent films, folk recordings, and the like.

I poked around Landover Baptist some yesterday. Funny stuff. The e-mails that they get from people who don't get the fact it is a joke are unreal. /images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I find the Camel Toe Report (http://www.cameltoe.org) to be quite entertaining. This guy can write some really funny stuff to go with the pictures.

Political oriented sites I visit regularly:

Informed comment (http://www.juancole.com/) Of course as a blog of a professor, must be automatically labelled leftist and liberal.

Asia Times Online (http://www.atimes.com) Interesting and usually informed commentary

Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk) Principle source of news. Delivered to my inbox

Thorntree forum (http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com) For at least as long as I am on the road.
