Im All For You, Ballad Songbook

I've always enjoyed Lovano's recordings although much of the time some of his concepts are really hit or miss. He's adventurous though and I've always thought it a great thing that I never knew what to expect from him. His newest album is an exploration of ballads. He is in the stellar company of the great Hank Jones on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Paul Motion on drums. It takes a special musician and thoughtful, experienced band to be able to pull off an album of all ballads and every track here is wonderfull listening. I was surprised by how well Monk's Mood and Countdown come off in these readings, as these are two up-tempo tunes I would have never imagined being treated as ballads. This is a must have for anyone who likes jazz, ballads or good sax playing. I'm sure it will be on my best of 2004 list.
