I played in my first pot limit O8 tournament yesterday, there were about 100 entrants. I have played a lot of limit O8 and pot limit O8 ring games and found that there were a lot of situations throughout the tournament where I was able to exploit big edges. The problem was that once it got down to 5 handed, where I was the second biggest stack going in, I got absolutely run over and finished 5th. My blinds were mercilessly attacked and I think I should have loosened up more and played in a few spots where I folded. What kind of spots should I look to defend where someone is pot raising about 1/3 or 1/2 of their stack and it's my blind. I know the value of big pairs goes up here, should I have two low cards to go with that type of hand? Should I look for hands with an ace? Hands with 3 low cards? I know that hand values run closer in this game then they do in holdem so it can't be too wrong to defend headsup in marginal situations. I have Zee's book and Cappeletti's book but they don't have much info about tournaments. I really feel like the way I played I didn't give myself much of a chance to win. I posted this in the Other Poker forum as well, but thought I would give it shot here too.

You probably wont get much run in this forum, since most of the posters here are NLHE specialists. I am not a PL O8 player, but I do know enough from reading around that you are right, you need hands that run better hot and cold. Of course hands that have 2 way potential help. 4 broadway cards probably go up in value (esp. w/ a pair). You probably don't need as good a low hand as normal. Ace-wheel card, 2-wheel card goes up in value shorthanded.

These are just my intuitions. BTW, how do you like the Cappelitti book?

I thought the Cappelletti book was excellent. His recommendations for starting hands are too loose though. Also, the moves he's got you doing in the book need to be done only occasionally and you should not get too carried away with them. The analysis of how to play high flops, low flops, when to push and when to pull is really good. I would recommend this book to anyone for limit O8. It doesn't have much for pot limit O8 though.
