If the win rate were the same for both, and there was a casino within a few minutes of your house, would you play mostly on your computer at home or live?

If my win rate at casinos was one-half the rate online, I would still play primarily in casinos. It's my social life, and I love the atmosphere. I meet my friends, watch ESPN, go out for breakfast or coffee, etc.
I spend too much time working at a computer to want to play on one.

Al

Is the win rate per hour or per 100 hands?

I'm with you on this one. I love the atmosphere of the casino.

per year. That way the question has relevance.

It depends on the atmosphere of the casino and home.

Commerce? Likely stay home. Hustler? Likely go to the casino.

It depends on who I'd likely run into at the casino.

Josh W? Likely stay home. Anyone else? Likely go to the casino.

But all kidding aside, when I play live, I keep very much to myself. I don't want to become friendly with someone and feel bad for check-raising them or something like that. In fact, a lot of times when I play I wear my sweatshirt and just put my hood up. Yup, I'm pretty much just an unfriendly, antisocial bastard.

Also, the distance factor is a pretty big one as well. The closest casino to me is probably a good 30 or 40 miles away, which may seem close to some, but is still a pain in the ass, especially with today's gas prices. I'd much rather just play online in my underwear.

Absolutely at the casino.

Depends on who's at the casino. Without naming names, a local casino fits my idea of a social atmosphere about as well as hanging out in a prison yard - in another country.

I found Vegas to be a much more enjoyable place to sit at a table and find some social interaction with people that I can occasionally relate to.

I'd play at home and I'm assuming that getting seated is just as easy at a the Casino which it seldom is. I would much rather not put up with the crowds; play more shorter sessions than fewer longer ones; and not hassle with traffic. Basically the situation you describe is what exists for me. I live about 15 minutes away from a card room.

I s'pose I'd rather play at the casino.

I like the banter, I like the feel of the chips, I like being able to see who I'm playing against.

But, I can do without the obnoxious drunks. Online, they aren't as annoying.

But, aside from the obnoxious drunks, I'd choose the casino at 1/10th the win rate.

If the casino was smokefree i would love it..... but sitting for X hours in row with 3 people chainsmoking wouldnt be worth it.

Of course it would never be possible in sweden anyway becuse of our nice 5% rake up to 200kr (~$26) per pot.

omg i put myself on tilt just thinking about casino cosmopol.... the smoke, the retard tournament structures, the lack of parkingspaces, the 1 minutes shuffle per hand, lack of runners,

THAK GOD FOR INTERNET and undergroundpokerrooms.

try about 300 miles. Charleston SC is in the middle of the "bible belt." Don't forget gambling is a no-no and we're all going to hell for tossing little clay chips /images/graemlins/wink.gif

And tossing in general.

Damn it. Double entrendres just don't work with people who speak a different language.

Anyway, nearest Poker room for me? Maybe Sydney or Melbourne. Well, unless I qualify for the High-roller game downtown, but somehow I doubt it.

Even if it was next to my house, and my win rate per unit of time was the same, I'd mostly play online. Less things to concentrate on.

Very interesting,
I had thought that most people would be wishy washy on thier preferences. They were not. Most people have a strong preference one way or the other. I had origionaly thought that the internet would eventually destroy or canabolize the casino game. Now I dont think so. Thanks to all those who responded.

Quite the contrary I suspect. The online game will bring in droves of new players to B&M who would otherwise would never have taken up poker.

One group that may suffer is poker rooms with geographic monopolies that have high drops and poor playing conditions. The B&M industry may have to improve in some cases to meet the competition.

I live 10 minutes down the road from Foxwoods. My winrate is about the same for both, but I play mostly online because there is much lower varience online if you multi-table low-limit tables while collecting bonuses. Also, I hate 2nd hand smoke and even though the FW card room is smoke free there is a lot of residual smoke from adjacent parts of the casino.

Even though I play mostly online, I still play live quite a bit. Where I play on a given day really just depends on what I feel like doing at the time.

I find this question very interesting. I first tried online poker a few years ago and hated it. It took me a long time to accept on-line poker as an acceptable alternative to B&M rooms. I live an hour and a half from Foxwoods and up until about a year ago I was their every weekend. Today, playing in a B&M is the alternative for me to playing on-line. Once I got used to the interface and got over my initial distrust, the pluses of online play far outweighed the negatives.

Advantages:

I don't have to wait as long to get in a game. (You can wait up to an hour to get in a game at Foxwoods these days)

Game selection

Game Speed (more hands and hour = more money in my pocket)

No Commute (This doesn't apply to your question)

Less rake

Availability of tournaments. (If you can't show up 2 hours before the start of a tournament at Foxwoods to signup, don't bother going)

DISADVANTAGES

I can't see my opponents.

No Chips to play with. But I have since fixed this problem. I always have a couple stacks of chips nearby to add a heightened sense of realism to my home poker endeavors. /images/graemlins/grin.gif
