the local calling station limps UTG and all fold to you on the button with Kh-Jh.

Do you call, fold or raise?

by "local calling station", i assume that means that his limping standards are very loose. if this interpretation is correct, then it's an easy raise IMO.

yea, I meant his limping standards are very loose, regardless of position.

I recall reading this one at some point as well. If memory serves me right, the Coach's inclination was to just call. The reason given was that you don't have a hand to show down at the end and you may find yourself just blowing off chips on each street trying to get the calling station to lay down.

Or something like that.

Now, I have a lot of respect for Ciaffone. His "Improve Your Poker" is a very good book and in general, it is clear from his CP articles that he has some excellent ideas. But this ain't one of them.

I would no doubt raise.

I have the following problem with that rationale:

If UTG is really loose, then you may in fact have a hand to show down if you don't improve, and you won't have to pay much to show it down because he's so passive, and his passiveness will allow you to fold your K high when it's no good because any show of initiative from him will mean that he has you beat.

Against a calling station I just call here. I am going to have to make a hand to beat him and my hand is strong enough not to worry about chasing out the blinds but not stong enough to win a showdown unimproved.

I would like to know how often the KJs will win without "improving". By that, I mean not making a straight, flush, or any pair type hand with a K or J. Can someone figure this out? If so, then I would like to see the results for some hands like QJs or J10s. I'm curious where the correct fulcrum would be for making a raise here. I agree with Bob's general point, just not where he drew the fulcrum.

If you think a raise will move the blinds out, then I'll raise every time. If the blinds are like the UTG, then I don't like the raise.

You have a chance here to isolate a calling station, Why let the blinds in?

Ciaffone's answer was to just call.

raise

..raise or call. Guy's a calling station so he'll call you all the way down with middle pair if no A's or K's flop. Raise most've the time, but there's nothing wrong with a call either, esp. since you have the button.
