Stack sizes are 500, 1500 (you), 3500, and 4500.
Blinds are 100/200.
You fold the blinds, including a hand you would otherwise play. The small stack goes all-in on the button, and is called by the SB. The small stack wins. All the sudden you both have 1200 chips. You just sacrificed a great deal of chip EV to increase your chances of making the money, and since the small stack doubled up, you are now much more likely to finish 4th, and far less likely to finish 1st.

A lot of people assume that small stacks are at some kind of disadvantage since they are close to going broke. People underestimate their chances of not doubling up, but in many cases, tripling up or more (thanks to the large blinds).
