I was wondering if anyone could give me advice to become good a gin. ALso, what is the difference of gin and gin rummy, and was Stu Ungar a gin or gin rummy champion. What does it mean to be the champion? Is there WSOG? Where are high stake cash games played? In a casino?

Basically how can I study gin to become better. A search on google for gin tips/strategy turned up nothing.

Thanks,
Nate

Gin and gin rummy are the same game.

There is (or was) a gin rummy championship played every year in Vegas. Gin tournaments predate poker tournaments. I don't know if Ungar ever won it, but he was long considered the world's best.

Tourney story (http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Features/CA_Feature_Basic_Template/0,2344,542,00.html)

There have been several 2+2 threads over the years about good gin books. A search might bring them up. My favorite introduction was Play Gin to Win by Irwin Steig. Not everybody likes his style; I am sure there are more modern titles on the subject. I've never seen a gin book comparable the 2+2 books on poker; all the ones I've seen have some hokey in them somewhere.

I haven't played serious gin in decades and haven't kept abreast of the latest developments, this is just some info to get you started.

1) Play online a bit. There are leagues for points and for money. Try Yahoo games.

2) All of your melds are kept in your hand in Gin Rummy. In Rummy, you have the choice to lay down a meld during play, or sandbag.

3) The WSOP at Binion's had a WSOG. I don't think they have held it in the last 2 years though.

Yes, there are Gin tournaments. Here is one of the best that I found: http://www.ginrummytournaments.com/riviera5.htm

4) I've never seen Gin played in a casino. I would expect high stakes games are held in private clubs.

Here are some more Gin resouces:
