As we all know, T.V. is being credited for much of the growth of no-limit hold'em over the past couple years. I'm sure it has helped other forms of poker to grow as well but definately not to the point it has helped no-limit texas hold'em. This year ESPN is airing a small number of events from the 2004 WSOP other than the $10,000 buy-in main event no-limit tournament. Here is the current air time schedule...

2004 World Series of Poker Schedule on ESPN

Sept. 7 10 p.m. Main Event
Sept. 14 9 p.m. Main Event
Sept. 14 10 p.m. Main Event/Champion crowned * World Championship

What makes me curious is the question that, could the televised events besides hold'em experience any growth as well? I would say that it's unlikely any of them would catch on like no-limit hold'em has. I think to T.V. veiwers no-limit hold'em is exciting and amazing, due to the amount of money involved, to watch. I think it will always have a lock on the majority of armchair poker players. But the question still remains. Will the newly televised forms of poker experience growth? And furthermore, if any, which will gain the most in popularity from the newly televised events?

I think television, especially ESPN's broadcast of the WSOP helped to bring alot of new players to the game. The 2003 WSOP suprised even ESPN when it recieved such high ratings from each broadcast that aired. But I don't think the other games will catch on just because to an outsider they look more difficult than hold em does. The brilliant aspect of texas holdem will always be that it looks so darn easy to a beginner that once they win that first be pot with 27o they're hooked. Heck when I first started playing I thought I knew it all when I was seeing like 50-60% of the flops. Thats the main reason why I don't see Omaha or stud catching on like texas hold em did.

Anyone want to take a shot at what the next big poker game will be (the one that benifits the most from the new television exposure)? If you do 8 years from now you can say you said it first. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

the biggest difference in poker due to TV is that all these frigging idiots wear hats and sunglasses and try to bluff in $2/4 games at your B&M.

I think Omaha's popularity might be helped a bit by these broadcasts.

Razz is 7 card stud played for low only.

I think it will have a significant impact on the growth of the other games. I started playing hold'em almost exactly a year ago when I happened to turn on the TV and see a televised tournament in which Phil Ivey and Devilfish Ulliot were playing in and was hooked from that very moment.

I was excited to see ESPN's new schedule, because I am very curious to see Omaha and 7card in play. I'm sure I'll start playing those games after I see it at a high level. So, atleast for me, it will most likely cause me to start playing more games now that I am finally a winning low limit hold'em player. Months of losing before finally figuring the game out sure feels good.

I agree. If there is a frontrunner it would almost have to be omaha. It's played somewhat like hold'em and like hold'em isn't too difficult to catch on to.

You dare doubt the drawing power of RAZZ?
