View Full Version : 20-40 hand in Rama

Hi, all.

20-40 in Casino Rama.

Game is very good. I'm in the cut off with KK. 3 relatively live limpers, who calls any connectors or suited cards from any position. I've been running the game, and I can tell some guys are trying to outplay me. I raise, button and both blinds fold.

Flop: Q Q 4, rainbow.

Check, Check, Check, I check.

Turn: 9.

Bet, fold, fold, I call.

River: 3

Bet, I call.

Bettor showed 4,5 off suit. I took it down.

Comments?

I would bet the flop. Pot is to big to play around. If your hand is good you checking might let someone pick up a draw on the turn. If you get called on the flop by 1 or 2 people I may check the turn because I'm either way ahead or way behind. And the fact that they are making moves if I bet the turn and get check raised I will have to call because I know they are capable of bluffing here. And it also might induce a bluff on the river.

As far as your hand went down, since you checked the flop and now bet into on the turn I like your just calling. If you raise you only get called or raised if he has Queen. And will stop him from bluffing the river if he is bluffing.

I think giving a free card to 3 opponents to spike an Ace to beat you is a little risky.

If the guy with the 45off is willing to bet the turn and river and wants to outplay you maybe he'll checkraise your flop bet and bet the turn and river and you can gain an extra bet without risking a free card. He's in the perfect position to make this play and isolate himself, you want to play this hand vs 45 off. If this guy checkraises and you get a cold call from one of the other 2 players it help you define their hands too.

"I'm either way ahead or way behind. And the fact that they are making moves if I bet the turn ..."

That is right, but is that also the reason to check the flop? I'd think giving a free card is not too dangerous here, since there is only one over card A that could threaten me. And if I'm way ahead, they will have to hit the board twice to outdraw me.

I don't like your play. First you are describing a game where people should call you down with very little, and second, trying to induce a bluff with a pair on board usually works best when heads up, not multiway. Your check on the flop probably cost you money. I suspect that the player with the five-four would have called you down anyway.

You should bet the flop for two main reasons:

a. The play possum and raise the turn move is tailored to knock out 5 outers in a multiway pot. With the QQ4 flop, no one can have a 5 outer against your kk.

b. Your flop bet "purifies" the action. A check could allow draws on the river. A bet also makes reading hands much easier.

when the game is good and loose, you should be making more thin value bets. on the flop you could get calls from aces, fours, or any pocket pairs.

once you checked the flop, it's fine to just call it down once the other two players fold and it is heads up. bad players will continue to bluff but usually throw away garbage hands when raised on the turn

Mason,

What's the play if you get check raised on the flop? What if one player check raises and another calls two cold? Is this a sure fold?

Rama is 1.5 hours north of Toronto. Poker was introduced a year and a half ago. Games are still lively. 20-40 is usually the big game, but there's occassionaly a 50-100 or no limit game going.

I cannot say for sure, but I have heard the rake is something astronomical like 10%/$5.

One of the players in my home game was in Toronto when Rama first opened, and he was something like 140th on the poker waiting list when he got there.

the rake is as follows

5-10 10% up to $10

10-20 seat charge $5 every half hour

20-40 seat charge $6 every half hour

not much in comps, .50 per hour spent at a table
