View Full Version : Does the caller have to show his hand if he loses?

I was playing an 8/16 game this past weekend when this hand came up. I won't post the specifics of the hand as they are not important.

Anyway I checked the river and called the opponent's bet. He won the hand and I mucked. He then asks the dealer if he could see my hand, to which the dealer obliged. Since I was the caller and I lost the hand, do I have to show my hand? I was a little frustrated that I lost the hand that I didn't say anything, but it occurred to me afterwards that I didn't think that was correct.

Thoughts?

most cardrooms allow this, but the practice is generally frowned upon. in st. louis, for example, if you ask multiple times you will literally get asked to leave the casino. this is posted in the rules.

In most cardrooms any player on the table is allowed to request that a mucked hand be shown if player calls the final bet (or checks the river through).

This is precisely why I have started throwing my cards directly into the muck.

Funny story:

A few weeks ago (the day after which I started throwing into the muck), there was a player who kept asking to see my hand when he'd suck out on me on the river. Finally one hand it was pretty obvious that I had the nuts given my action and he folded to my river bet. He then asked "can I see his cards?" and the dealer and I both simultaneously said: "NO."

I believe that the general rule is there to keep people from cheating. If a player requests to see another players hand as long as they called the bet it must be revealed. In these times, most players are unaware that the rule is only there to keep players from cheating and they abuse it. The casinos try to avoid it because it does nothing from their standpoint but waste time. The more hands they deal the more rake they take. They'd rather just keep things moving.

I had no idea that was the case, and I've never seen the rule enforced in Chicago. Here, if I call a bet and the bettor mucks, I can ask to see his hand, that's clear. But if I call, he shows, and I muck, I didn't know of any rule forcing me to show. That's interesting too, because it's not unusual for the bettor to ask me what I had.

I'll start shooting them directly into the muck from now on.

This rule is solely to prevent collusion. It is unethical to ask to see a hand for any other reason, but it is technically allowed.

In the card rooms where I usually play, if someone asks to see a hand, it is live again and will win the pot if it, in fact, was the winner.

No. You forfeited your right to the pot when you mucked. The only reason within the rules he has to see the cards is if collusion is suspected.
