raising a PP in LP (preflop) with previous callers?

a couple of times recently I've been in the situation where I've had 66,77, and 99 on the button with about 5 limpers to me. Purely off instict I've wanted to raise here, I'm not sure why and not sure if its correct, so I'm asking.

My understanding is that in a tough/tighter game you make this play to entice your opponents to call future bets when you happen to catch.

In weaker games where they're going to chase regardless of the size of the pot, like every game I've ever played in, there really isn't a need for it.

There are probably other considerations also, but I just woke up like 5 minutes ago.
