Assumption #1: you profit by making your opponents make mistakes.
Assumption #2: raising preflop gives an opponent holding a hand like 78s poor implied odds, thus if they the call, they are making a mistake.

Correct me if either of the these assumptions are wrong or out of context here, but how does raising preflop help you in a game with calling stations, other than just putting more money in the pot when you have the best hand. In other words, how is manipulating the implied odds in these cirumstances advantageous.

Well lets say that they have suited connectors they have about 1 in 15 chance of making a hand if they take these to the river. If you have 100 dollars in front of you and he has 100 dollars in front of you, and you make a min raise of say 2 bucks. He's getting 50:1 implied odds if he can somehow lure you to the river with him when he hits his hand. If you raise to say 7 bucks or so then his implied odds are now under the odds he needs to be able to play that hand with a +EV.

Thanks, nem. I understand that by raising you're giving him poor implied odds. But what I don't understand, how does giving him bad odds benefit you ? Is it as simple as, "You have the best hand, so by adding more money into the pot early, it is more profitable?" If that is the case, then it seems that by giving him bad odds, thus causing to make a mistake by calling, is simply a moot point.

Well it HELPS you in the same way it would help you if you talked him into somehow giving you 10 dollars for every flip of the coin you won, and you gave him 5 dollars every time he won. It simply is an advantageous wager for you no matter what. It hurts him because he will never be able to make as much money out of the times he does hit to make up for the times he calls and misses.

However, in a game of calling stations, it is often the other drawing hands that benefit the most from these drawers calls, and the best hand can even in some cases WANT the drawers to correctly fold.

But usually it works like this: they make bad calls, you gain by betting/raising because they put in more money than they want to when they are behind. Against a lot of calling stations, your hand won't win as much, but the pot will be huge when you do. Not raising costs you a part of this huge pot.
