SB at the final table vs. BB

I'm playing in a multi-table tourney this morning. I'm in the SB. Levels are 800/1600. It's about 5 hands into the final table with 6 players left. The chip leader is the BB and I have no read on him, he's played at other tables all morning.

I've got A /images/graemlins/spade.gif J /images/graemlins/heart.gif
Everyone folds to me. So I raise 800. Thinking I can buy the blind (I've got about 2300 in chips.)

BB calls.
6 /images/graemlins/club.gif 8 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif 2 /images/graemlins/spade.gif is the flop.

Without even breathing, BB goes all in. And I muck.

What would have been a more optimal play?

How many chips does your opponent have? (limits are 800/1600 and you only have 2300?)

This is limit or no limit?

What is your relative chip position to the rest of the table?

My oppinion depends greatly on the answers to the above, but betting on the flop is almost a must, otherwise you are just asking to have the pot taken from you. Also, if it is NL your raise should be a little higher pre flop. Also, if you really only have 2300 and the limits are 800/1600 reguardless of structure you should be going all the way with any hand you play.

Actually, I'm sorry about the numbers...
I had 2300 chips...
blinds were 400/800 (had to re-check my notes)
Chip leader had over 6k in chips
As far as chip position, I was in thrid with chips. 2nd had about 3100, fourth had about 2k.

800 should not be a legal raise if the BB is 1600. The minimum you should be able to raise is to 3200 (double the BB). Even if there were some funny rules going on here, push preflop. It isn't close.

AJo figures to be the best hand. Any raise pot-commits you. All-in. It isn't close.
