I was hoping to get some clarification on what is meant by a 3X Big Blind raise in a No-Limit Hold'em Tournament (i.e. a standard raise).

I have been interpreting this to mean that if the blinds are $50 - $100, that a 3X BB raise would be a "raise of" $300 so that the total bet size would be $400. But it seems that some authors suggest that a 3X BB raise would be a "raise to" $300 so that the total bet (including calling the $100 blind) would only be $300.

Any insight would be appreciated if my initial interpretation is correct that a 3X BB raise would be a total bet of $400 and a total bet to $300 would only be a 2X BB raise. Thanks.

The terminology is vague but when I and many others say a 3x bb raise we mean a raise "to" 300. In other words if the bb is 100 you raise it 200 chips, committing 300 to the pot.

There is nothing wrong with raising 300 up "to" 400 but you will find when the blinds get big a smaller raise will likely accomplish many of the goals you set.

If you are short stacked sometimes it's good to raise to 2.5 or 2.75 times the BB with a strong hand that you don't mind getting called with, but this only applies when the blinds are large i.e you have less than 15 big blinds in your stack.

It's in my rather short FAQ (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=682961&page=&view=&sb =5&o=&vc=1)
