IIRC the past 4 champs were Fossilman, Moneymaker, Varkoni, and Ferguson. How would you rank them as NL tournament poker players?

My personal opinion would be:

1.Ferguson
2.Fossilman
3.Moneymaker
4.Varkoni

Although I don't really have a strong argument for this listing...JMHO from what I"ve seen/heard/read.

That is my vote as well, along with the same disclaimer.

Ferguson
Moneymaker
Fossilman
Varkoyni

I also don't have enough history, especially on Raymer but with Moneymaker also getting 2nd in a WPT event I give him the slight edge (from my limited knowledge)

I'd definitely put Varkonyi in last place. As for the other three, it might be too close to judge.

I've always disagreed with those that say Moneymaker just got lucky. After having played in this year's WSOP, I can honestly say that to win the Big One in your first crack at it is no small accomplishment and it's incredibly difficult to do.

IIRC, Carlos Mortensen should be in that list instead of Chris Ferguson.

You are correct. It should be Mortenson.

I would say

1. Carlos
2. Fossilman
3. Moneymaker
4. Varkoni

Don't short Fossilman's top finishes either, pre-WPT. Fossilman has way more experience, and better results in big tournaments than Moneymaker. That's not to slight Moneymaker in any way, but when you compare the track records of these 2, then the vote is clear for Fossilman over Moneymaker.

Now, if you're just comparing the last 1.5 years, you probably have a case for Moneymaker.

fergusen and fossilman are clearly 1+2 and the other two are like 5,000 + 5,001.

I played with Mortenson before his win. wasn't impressed at all, and was shocked when I saw that he won the tournament. granted, it was a mid limit ring game and not a tournament, but it didn't seem like he grasped the basic concept of a non-static opponent. he played the same way against everyone (aggressive) and spewed as many chips to aware opponents as he gathered from passive ones.

I haven't even looked at the other responses, but would be very surprised if virtually everyone didn't give the same answer:

Ferguson
Raymer
Moneymaker
Varkonyi

This seems like a no-brainer.

Now let me go and check the other responses to see how wrong I am.
