Any other recommendations out there from the 2+2 community on this? I don't have any MP3 player yet, and have found that people either love iPods or hate them. What about the other brands?

I would love to see some responses, as i am thinking of purchasing the iPod mini, which is 4GB and holds about 1000 songs, which is more than enough for me.

www.cnet.com (http://www.cnet.com) has reviews. the dell jukebox, for example, is cheaper and has WAY better battery life. but...it doesn't have the sweet ipod user interface and it's larger. there are a lot of players on the market, it mostly depends on your size/battery life needs.

The mini is SWEET. I got it imported via E-Bay, highly recommended.

iPod

Not the first, but the best for over two years running.

I have the Creative Labs Nomad Zen NX 30GB player and love it. It's $229 on sale at either Best Buy or Circuit City right now. The buttons are located on the sides, instead of the front, but otherwise it's about the same specs as the iPod for less money. The battery is replaceable, which was the main knock against the previous model of the Zen.

The Zen is great. I have dropped mine many times and it still runs great....

I have a Rio Nitrus (http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/shop/_templates/item_main_Rio.asp?model=219&cat=35) That I like very much. Holds 1.5gb (about 20-25 hrs of mp3 music) and no moving parts inside to cause problems. I have been very happy with it.

I too, have been thinking about the iPod. My only concern is the battery life, which others have reported anywhere from fine to spotty.

Well, its not the size, its how you use it right?

I was also thinking about purchasing an MP3 (or digital music player). I was wondering if anyone has any expierience with a Palm Pilot that plays MP3's?

They usually don't have hard drives that are anywhere near the size of the iPod or Rio. Aside from that, they usually can be setup to work well as an MP3 player.

I have a 40G iPod. I use it mainly at work between 6-8 hours a day. By the end of the day, the battery indicator is low but it's never quit on me. I just charge it up overnight and repeat the next day.

Certain usages can cause the battery to drain faster such as keeping the backlight on, skipping between albums frequently, keeping the volume high for a long time, etc. I have several playlists that I listen to at about 50% volume.

Ipod is overrated imo as there are a lot of better options out there for cheaper. The sound quality and battery life on the ipod leave something to be desired.

Here is a very good discussion on this very topic from another message board:

I just bought a mini, and think it's great. The one potential drawback is the hard disk size. I'm pretty picky about audio quality and am using AAC coding at 320kbps. At that data rate, I was able to fill up the disk with "only" 30 or so CDs. Still a lot, but it would have been nice to have a little more room. Rumor has it that they'll come out with a 6GB or 8GB version in the not terribly distant future, and that would be a meaningful improvement.

As an aside, I think that even the 320kbps AAC compression may be noticible. I'm waiting for the 80-120GB mini, so I can put on a couple of hundred uncompressed CDs! Shouldn't be more than 5 or so years out.

I bought a 50 dollar portable sony cd player with atrac3 support. You can burn cds that contain about 30 ablums with good enough sound quality. I like this idea a lot better for poker than an ipod. If someone happens to it like I drop it i'm only out the 50 bucks instead of the much larger investment of the ipod. It also claims it gets 85 hours of play on 2 AA batteries but I haven't used it that long yet.
