I really didn't want to give him a chance to raise me off my hand on the flop, and when he checked the turn, I was sure I had either the best hand or he'd fold his if I made at least a half-sized pot bet....

Thoughts???

I don't think you played it too badly, but I would have bet the flop. Look at it from his point of view. You raised pre-flop about 8xBB. To me this would represent many hands, including AA KK QQ AK AQ AJ, maybe some smaller pairs, smaller Ax depending on the player. So when the A comes on the flop, I think he has to assume that most of the hands he would defend his blind with were beat. My guess is he had a small pair and was trying to flop a set and break you. He may have thought you were trying to trap him when you checked behind. Of course, if he could find it in himself to reraise either a flop bet or the turn bet then you would probably have to fold.
I just went back through the HH and noticed you were on the button. The fact it was folded to you would probably increase my list of possible hands that you would have made that raise with, reading it as a steal attempt. He should have tried to bet the A and given you the tough decision.

Edited:
I should let you know I'm not a "guru" or anything. I have been a moderate winner playing 10+1 and now 20+2 SNGs at PP for about 5 months (250 tournies).
