<<PHILLIP HELLMUTH JR $33,350>>

There is no justice.

Why? Did Phil wrong you in some way?

Everyday other people make me a bigger fan of Moneymaker and Hellmuth just with their pointless dislike of them.

He must be playing a lot of those creative hands.

Reading about his little temper tantrum when someone DARED to put him all-in early made me lose a bit more respect for him.

I honestly used to think that the whole "whining on-tilt" thing was just a mind game he played with the table to distract them, but now I'm not so sure.

Not that I was there, or know what happened, but my guess wouldn't be that he was pissed at the player, it was that he was upset because he knew that his trips were no good.

From pokervoice.com...

<<London player Robert Lin went all in on Phil Hellmuth on the river. Phil loses his cool, swears, stand ups, throws his chair on the floor and storms away, folding his hand. >>

I can understand his being upset and ticked off (although with all the poker he's played you'd think he'd be used to these sort of hands), but the tantrum is just childish and doesn't accomplish anything positive.

Why care? It doesn't hurt anyone either (as long as his chair didn't hit anyone). Just enjoy the entertainment and smile. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

(Now, it would be different if he somehow offended the guy who put him all-in but I haven't seen any reports of that)

Every sport needs a villain. I think it was Norman Chad that said that when people STOP talking about Phil, he'll start worrying.

pointless dislike ? I tried to remain open-minded on Hellmuth for YEARS and he finally pushed me firmly into the dislike camp. And I'm not referring to his table whining. His columns for Card Player, his interviews, his segments in the "Poker Kings" documentary - they all show the most egotistical, self centered and generally annoying person in poker.

let's look at the 2nd paragraph from his most recent column:

<< I've been very busy with the business side of poker lately: first, writing my new book (Bad Beats and Lucky Draws, due out in October); second, making a series of videos (Phil Hellmuth's Million Dollar Poker System); third, creating the new, first-class "Phil Hellmuth Chip Set" — available at philhellmuth.com — a set that includes two videos, high-quality chips, and my book Play Poker Like the Pros; fourth, representing a new cell phone hold'em game that will be released on a major carrier soon (yes, you can play hold'em on a cell phone!); fifth, signing a contract to represent the new Edge Television (a new cable station for gaming shows); sixth, playing at UltimateBet.com; seventh, selling The Madison Kid movie about my life, up to age 25, to Beacon Pictures; eighth, creating and selling my own reality show; ninth, doing my "Poker Nights" for $25,000 a night; 10th, teaching a poker class for the "Learning Annex"; and finally, talking to some very cool mainstream companies about sponsorship and a clothing line. Yikes, it's no wonder I'm so tired every day; just reading this list makes me tired! >>

He is consumed with himself. And I have news for Phil - just about everything on that list will fail miserably. No one is going to pay money to watch stuff about someone they hate. And a CLOTHING LINE ?!? ROFLMAO ! I can just hear the ads now...

"Yes, you too can look like a pasty white lump in the new line of Hellmuth action gear. Comfortable enough to sit on your butt all day playing poker, flexible enough for patting yourself on the back."

Bah,

He's promoting himself. If his financially tied to all those products, it's not just bragging to promote them, it's good business sense.

It's my opinion that for anybody to consistantly do well in a competative environment you've got to be pretty high on yourself. You see it from atheletes all the time. I'm sure that one of the reasons Phil is a great poker play is because of his belief that "good things happen to him".

I'm not defending his tantrums, but I find it bizzare that people just seem to by looking for reasons to dislike him.

I honestly LOVE reading these threads. You can just see the jealously oozing from Sly grin's keyboard. It's awesome. The 'phil-bashers' are so jealous and will jump on anything to try to bring him down, while he just laughs, plays great poker, and makes a ton of money.

anybody ever read zmichael Koniks book when he devoted a section about Phil? I think the most important reason he does all the other stuff is becuase his game is lacking. He admits to being almost broke (poker bankroll) which says alot about one of the top tourney pro's.

People are so fast to judge what they dont really know.

Cmon, people hate helmuth cause he's a crybaby. I think he's a great player, and have no jealousy towards the guy at all, but I can't stand the guy. Every time he catches a bad beat he has to whine about it. Every play someone makes that he may not agree with he has to say something. I have no problem with him being self-confident, even cocky, hell he's a pro poker player, if you didnt think you were gonna win every time why would you even bother? but the fact still remains when he gets beat, whether by good play or luck, just shut up and take it. You don't see Ivey, Lederer, or any other of the elite players crying every time some one catches a bad beat on them do you?

Sly_Grin
05-23-2004, 05:55 PM
LOL, yeah, of course - anyone who doesn't like him MUST be jealous ! Get real. There is a reason so many people dislike him. Do you read his columns ? I've read every one for the last 2 years. They've long since stopped being about poker strategy and have become nothing but self promotion and bad beat whining. Have you listened to his interviews, seen him bitching time after time ?

Do you see anyone bashing Lederer or Hansen or Juanda or Ivey whoever you want to name ?

He is no longer about playing poker, he is about promoting Phil Hellmuth. And people will continue to dislike him for that.

But you go ahead and think that it's just jealousy. Loser.

C'mon, you guys gotta admit some of the stuff he does is just plain entertaining! I was laughing my butt off when I read that story about Phil throwing his chair down and storming out of the casino! That's some good stuff. Without Phil, poker wouldn't be the same.

I'd like to see Phil play at a table full of other crybabies. Where every time someone loses they get mad and whine about it. Just to see what he would do. Justice.

I think the guy way over-reacts when luck turns against him, but I do think he is one of the best few tournament poker players in the world. But he's writing a book called, "Bad Beats and Lucky Draws." That's just so him.

Sounds more like a fan than a foe to me. Ever think it is to his advantage to be so disliked???? If I am one of the top 5 names known in a "sport", (He is....don't kid yourself) I am doing something right. The "I" being Phil in this case.

I agree with him.....so many can't ebat him....hell even manage to be good enough to PLAY him.....so they are left with only one recourse "He's a prick." They feel some satisfaction on the clinging hope that they are a better person. Bet they rather be the better player if they were honest with themselves.

I gotta find an e-mail address to get on his reality show (no doubt about making it as a poker pro).

Heh, this reminds me of the scene in the Howard Stern movie, where the marketing research guys were talking about Howard Stern listeners. To paraphrase it was something like "Our research shows that people who like him, listen to him an average 1 hour 30 minutes per week. Those that HATE him listen to him an average of 2 hours and 45 minutes per week."

He's a brilliant poker player, moreover his self promotion and attitude makes him a brilliant business man too.

that was a great line but all of that garbage that Hellmuth is hawking will sell like mad. The player brought in by the WPT will own everything the guy sells and they will own one of McEvoys hand charts.

Maybe all that stuff about hating who you "can't beat" is true.

Maybe he really just is the [censored] many say he is.

Explain why the poker dealers dont like him....
There must be some reasonable explaination other then the truth.

Ive never met Phil H so I dont have much to go on.. but the last article I read of his was self glorification on how great he is outside of poker.. What new endevors he is branching out into.. It made me sick to read about someone who loves himself that much.

If its all a ploy I guess its a fine one.. GG PH
