If you have problems with pop up or sluggest computer performance you most likely have a problem with spy bots. Most computers that I'v run this on come up with over 100 problems.

Spy Bots search and destroy (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html)

Let me know if you need any help.

P.S. The best part is that This software is totally free

lavasoft makes a product called Ad-aware that is also free and excellent.

I've heard good thinga about Spy Bot, and I have Ad Aware, and it works great cleaning up spyware. Does Spy Bot really stop pop-up ads? I hate those things.

Both Yahoo and Google have tool bars that are supposed to stop pop-ups. I've tried both, and they aren't very good. Google's seems to work a little better than Yahoo's, but I'm guessing that it still lets through about half of them.

Trust me download and run spybot search and destory even if you have run ad-ware by java soft. You'll be surprised how many bots are slowing your computer down. esp. if you hit a porn site from time to time.

As far as stopping pop up it does a pretty good job. I would guess it stops over 95 percent of them. Good luck.

Spy sweeper is good also. It gets a lot of stuff that the other two don't.

Great link. I personally think websites that install these on your cpu should be at least fined if not run out of business. IMO it's much worse than spam.
Iwon.com instals spy bots on you cpu and it's a nasty one.
The scumbags!

I guess I was overconfident in my AdAware (which I still think is great software) SpyBot - S&D found several things AdAware didn't. I will be using them both from now on.

no problem, just trying to help out.

don't forget to immunize and also if you go into advanvce mode it has a great feature for managing you start up options.

And after you run spybot, get spywareblaster and it will block some sites from infecting your computer.

these programs all root out the spyware on your system, but another thing you can do, which i just did, is get yourself a firewall. zonealarm has a free one that seems to be good (I'm no expert). with the firewall, you don't need to track down the spyware--when it tries to report back to its masters, or receive new instructions, all communication is blocked (for any program you don't clear in advance). also, as far as popup blockers go, if you google freeware pop up blocker, you'll find a dozen things. go to your favorite download site and get a few. I tried three. I'm not at home and I forget the name, but what I have puts an icon in the system tray. I click to turn it on or off. none get through.

Zonealarm is a good step to take. Not all spyware, however, is a mini-program which tries to contact the Internet--I think some of it simply puts identifying cookies on your hard drive so that certain other sites can read where you have been and log it. To avoid this you have to set options, either through using windows or through some firewall, to block certain types of cookies. There are several levels to which you can set the privacy control; use your best judgment. You can even block all cookies but then certain sites may be difficult to navigate or may not display properly.

To remove all cookies go to Internet Options and work from there. To remove files which Windows will not allow you to erase (such as .dat files), which log every site you ever visited, or which log various other activities which cannot be erased merely by erasing cookies, I like HistoryKill. It is about $40 for a lifetime license though if I recall. Also, CyberScrub is a powerful program but I found it less user-friendly than HistoryKill. WindowsWasher or WindowWasher does not clean everything as well as HistoryKill (at least at my last trial which was a while ago.) PestPatrol is similar to Spybot S&D but IMO did not do as thorough a job (again, a while ago).
