My wife and I are coming to Vegas for 4 days in June. In 5 prior trips, we haven't found a good pizza place. Any recommendations from Vegas locals?

We are staying on the strip (Venetian), but are willing to cab to a good place.

There is really only one good pizza place in the whole city IMO. It is Aurelio's, which is south of the strip on Eastern, about 20-25 minutes from the Venetian.

Has to be New York style - among true pizza fanatics - Chicago pizza can never be classified as best. Good or acceptable is the hightest classification a Chicago pizza can ever attain!!

It is a Chicago pizza place, but their specialty is thin crust (they do have stuffed crust and deep dish if you choose, but I recommend the thin). I've taken several New Yorkers there and they rave about it. Their sausage is excellent.

I used to believe that until I went to Zachary's in Berkeley, CA of all places. Zach's is magic.

Sorry, no dice there. I used to love Tres Lobos inside the Stardust, but alas they closed down about 1.5 years ago.

Thanks for the tip, Clarkmeister. We will definitely try Aurelio's, as we are huge fans of NY style.

We have found the same thing about Mexican places there. It's my wife's favorite, and we have yet to find a good one. There are dozens in Houston. We have joked about moving to Vegas and opening a good TexMex place. We would make a killing.

Give it a shot. Like I said, its a Chicago place, so its not exactly what you think of as NY Style. It is, however, thin crust with superior toppings. I think you'll like it, even if they do cut it into little squares instead of big triangles. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Aurelio's # is 702-456-3900. (Got it programmed into my cell - we preorder and go there for lunch once a week).

There used to be an Aurelio's near me here at Green Valley Pkwy. and Warm Springs....Is this the same Aurelio's? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

LoL...We moved here from Houston last May and have yet to find anything close to good Mexican food here...It's probably the ONLY thing I miss about Houston /images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you open it here, they will come...

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: The two brothers who opened it had a falling out. Part of the colatteral damage was that the brother who kept the franchise license moved to the new Eastern/Horizon Ridge location and re-opened. The good news is that he is doing well, as he just expanded and added in a dining room.

Verazzano's is outstanding IMO. They have several locations.

As for Mexican, the best is Coyote's on Sunset Road.

this is a riduclous statement. just because they call a 16" pizza a medium instead of an XL, doesn't make the pizza good. there has been absolutely nothing special about any ny pizza i've ever had, besides the fact that the slices are huge.

there are a number of places in chicago, that do fabulous things to their crusts, and use fantastic quality toppings.

Then you've gone to the wrong places.

you've definitely been to the wrong places. Arturo's on Thompson and Bleecker is a great one. John's on Bleecker west of 7th somewhere is another. I'm sure there are many more but these two stand out in my mind.

My gf swears New Haven, CT pizza is the best in the world but I think she's delusional.

The pizza joint in the NYNY food village/court is excellent. NY style. And buying it by the pie it was cheaper than I often pay when in NYC.

And there's Lombardi's in SoHo, Lil Frankie's in the East Village, Grimaldi's in Brooklyn and plenty of others.

Just avoid anything with Ray or Famous in the name.

so i shouldn't have gone to original famous ray's? i also went to some place called pizza hut.

ok in honesty i didn't know where to go, and i'm not a huge fan of pizza. my point was he probably didn't go to the right places in chicago. it's been so long since i've lived there, i don't where they are anymore either.

Since there are no facts here but opinions. In my view a great pizza has a thin crust with a slight crunch and a thick edge with a slight chew. Easy on the sauce and a decent amount of quality cheese. I'm a purist - sometimes adding pepperoni or clams- when in season (the New Haven shops have awesome clam pizza. No goat cheese, wacko veggies or "New Age" topppings need apply.

In my opinion, due to water quality and use of coal fired or other extremely hot ovens - these pizza qualities primarily occur in the Northeast. There is also a chain in LA called NY Pizza which changes the LA water to match the characteristics of NYC water to replicate NY Style Pizza.

Wolfgang Puck's in Mandalay had pretty good pie last time I was there. I'm not even sure if thats still open though. As far as all the carry out/delivery joints go, I never had one even decent the entire time I was there. I could hit 100 random places in the Detroit area and never get one as bad as any of them, hard to believe.

Great post, although I think most NY places have too much cheese and not enough sauce. Also, your water theory could nicely explain why NY coffee blows ass compared to the West Coast and is the prevailing opinion as to the superiority of bagels here.

you can't just go to ray's famous original famous famous original pizza in midtown somewhere and then say you've had ny pizza.

best pizza in the city is grimaldi's in brooklyn, but patsy's is the same style and has many locations throughout the city.

most pizza in nyc is digusting trash, but the standouts are easily the 2nd best pizza shops in the world (the first being in new haven).

I know Uston is from connecticut, and I'm guessing you must be also. This does explain it. A couple of her friends agree as does my old boss. All from Connecticut. We've decided that something is put into the water in CT causing mass delusion. Unfortunately there is no cure. Modern is good, Bar is pretty good but none can beat Arturo's on Houston. none.

Vespa
05-21-2004, 01:49 PM
OK, I have to post now. The only delusion is one thinking that better pizza exists outside of New Haven. Arturo's is good. But nothing beats New Haven (Sally's, Pepe's, Modern, Bar) that's just naming the famous ones. The not so famous ones are great too. They're MUCH better than Arturo's any day. Cracker, this is your delusion. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But Arturo's and Lombardi's and John's in NYC are decent. Most places in the city though are just wannabes. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Modern is good, in that you don't have to wait two hours to get your pizza, but basically, it's a Sally's pizza with far too much cheese.

And, yes, Bar is good.

John's on Bleecker and Joe's on corner of Bleecker and Carmine are excellent as well. Joe's is probably my favorite, but the crust is so thin, that I have to eat about 10 slices to get full...
