View Full Version : Calling cards?

You're playing in a super-fast structured tourney and you can't get any cards. You're down to T700, 200/400 blinds, UTG raises, fold to you in BB, so you already have 400 in. Now its 300 to call for a pot of 1300.

What's the minimum you need to call here?

I'd probably need to have at least 2 cards to call that. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Aside from the fact that you spent more than half you chips posting the blind, the odds are too good to fold right?

Hey Brett - you know how much I hate getting all-in pre-flop /images/graemlins/tongue.gif and I still call with any 2 here.

Cya at PSO.

In those circumstances...I'd probably move in with any pair, Big cards and high suited connectors (98s and up), Generally, you'll be gambling with typical hands, but in a turbo type tourney...you have to gamble at some point with inferior hands if you want a chance to finish high in these type tournaments.

Gotta call with anything, if you folded, what would you do with small blind, when you're forced in with 200 of your remaining 300? Don't play in super-fast structured tournies.

The real point is this: on the hand prior to this one, you should have been all-in with any hand that had 2 cards higher than 8 or any face card. Slightly better cards the two hands prior to that one.

you have to call, the next hand, you are forced to post 200 or your remaining 300 anyway - you just hope that your oppenet isn't holding any of the cards you have - ex: if you have 7-2os, you would much rather your opponent have AK as A-7 or A-2

I completely disagree with this statement. Being essentially forced all-in with a random hand is FAR better than going all-in with something like K2o utg. Think about the pod odds you are getting in the BB that you aren't getting utg. See my reply to a post in the SNG forum entitled something like "I disagree. I fold." for more reasons why playing bad hands utg is a poor play.

Since you are all-in either way, you get better pot odds UTG. Your investment is the same, but UTG you can potentially win the caller's money + the blinds, while in the big blind you can only win the caller's money + the small blind.

The real point of not waiting until you are in the blind is that you may get everyone to fold if you raise from UTG. Implicit in this is that you need to make this move before you are reduced to, let's say, 1.1 BB.
