Last night at foxwoods casino, $2-$4. Only my second hand of the night so no real reads on anyone, although UTG+1 is doing some nifty chip tricks...

I am UTG with A /images/graemlins/heart.gifA /images/graemlins/diamond.gif.

Secada raises, UTG+1 calls, button calls, BB calls.

Flop:
Q /images/graemlins/club.gif9 /images/graemlins/spade.gif4 /images/graemlins/heart.gif

Secada bets, UTG+1 Raises, Button folds, BB calls, Secada 3-bets, UTG+1 Caps, BB calls, Secada Calls.

Turn 9 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif

Secada checks, UTG+1 bets, BB calls, Secada calls.

River 5 /images/graemlins/club.gif

Secada checks, UTG+1 bets, BB calls, Secada calls.

I feel I really screwed up by not betting out on the turn but I was wondering, would UTG+1 cap the flop with say, AQ? I didn't think so. Then when the second nine fell on the turn I thought I was definitely behind. I feel what I should have done here was bet the turn and fold to a raise. If I am not raised, then check/call the river.

Funny that I got pocket Aces in the second hand I ever played in a live casino game...Anyways, I appreciate you comments.

I feel grouchy.

[1] Betting the turn figuring to fold to a raise or check-call the river is hopeless. Surely they WILL raise with trip 9s on the turn; and if so you should bet out your clear favorite on the end; unless you want to check-raise. Bet out the turn if you figure UTG1 will check is likely pair of Qs once the BB snags his possible trip 9s.

[2] You've made a fundamental anaylsis mistake: lets not presume that just because YOU would not cap it with AQ that other competent folks would not. As you get betting at this you should have no problem asserting yourself in situations where the other guy must have made a big mistake. NewsFlash: they DO make big mistakes. Lots of them. That's why you can beat the game for actual profit.

Having said that I would like to add that figuring out what YOU would have in HIS situation IS a reasonable place to start when figuring out his hand (it grounds your analysis); but presuming he plays "correctly" like you is not.

[3] I'd have routinely called the flop raise figuring to check-raise the turn. Once the tight paranoid new-be raises PF early and then 3-bets the flop, its announcing AQ or better.

[4] Do a little introspective on the difference between "felt" and "think". Perhaps you really "felt" you were behind and "think" you should have bet. Its a good idea to take into account how your "feel" while "thinking" about what you are going to do, but distinquishing the two will let you override your feelings correctly from time to time.

Here's one. You have Q9 in the BB and the final board Q94-9-3. You've raised a few times. The aggressive player 3-bets the river and you "feel" you must be beat since surely he "must" know you have a big full house by now. You intend to call. But you "think" that the only hand that can beat you is QQ and there is only one combination of those left. Surely there are LOTS of other combinations that may induce this aggressive player to over-play his hand. So you "think" you should 4-bet and go ahead.

Louie,

First off I appreciate your comments. Being in my second hand in a live casino I was pretty nervous, and after reading my own post see how poorly I my thought process through this hand.

I do have a few questions.

1-If I bet out the turn and UTG+1 raises do I reraise? I would think yes unless BB reraises.
2-What if BB reraises?

I have no idea why UTG+1 capping the flop put me in check/call mode. Getting AA busted on Party by 5 10o has made me way to passive with AA-KK.

Anyways, thanks.
