I am making a second attempt at building a bankroll. I love the game of poker but cant just take some funds and make a deposit. My first attempt was with the help of a friend and the referral bonus on Party. Long story short, after some fluctuation, I went broke. There was $1.50 in my account and I had given up for awhile.

A few weeks ago Party put $20 bucks in my account. I have since worked off the bonus of raked hands, that was fun 125 hands(I think) with a $20 b/r at Party .5/$1. Once I had the bonus worked off my b/r was around $30. Not wanting to keep risking that small amount in a ring game I decided to play limit tourneys. I've been doing ok I think but am new to the game. I figure the tourneys give me the best chance to see the most cards the cheapest...not sure if this is right but thats why Im playing them. Im staying with limit for now because Im not too good with calculating the bet percentages with no-limit and therefore think I am a little protected from going all-in in an ill-advised position.

Anyway my b/r since starting the tourney play has been up to $80 and presently is $60-65. I can give some finishes but have only been in about 30 $5+$1 SNG's at Party. My short-term goal is to get the b/r over $200. Then I am going get the money to purchase poker tracker and start playing .5/$1. Once I have the poker tracker and $150 in the b/r...Umm I dunno /images/graemlins/smile.gif Then I'll keep playing and look at alot of stats for a long time I guess?

My question is does it sound like my short term plan can work? Is the best way to build a b/r with one as small as mine something that can work or is it a shot in the dark?, a coinflip? Also, anyone have a guess as to how long it will take me to get to $200, or how many tourneys I guess.

Thanks for any help

I don't know if this helps you but if I really needed to build a bankroll with as little risk as possible I would go to Intercasino and/or its skins for the following reasons:

1. They have freeroll tournaments every day that are not too hard to place in (I just play em for fun and to play crazy poker). Saturday's freeroll has $3000 in the prize pool.

2. You get a $55 bonus for playing 300 raked hands. Unfortunately the lowest limit is 1/2 but if you play extremely tight you should almost guarantee a profit. Also the players there at the lowest level are about as bad as Party.

There are four or five other skins with similar bonuses but you may not have the bankroll to spread your money around. Once you finish the required number of hands don't play any more at Intercasino as there rake is high.

I hope this helps.

First rule of playing poker and not going broke is to lpay within your bankroll.

At the moment you are not and I would not suggest going to play 1/2 at intercasino neither as your roll is nowhere near enough for that.

If your plan is to play ring games is to get to one of the sites that have micro games eg Stars Vc/Golden Palace start playing ring games at the low level and build your roll from there.

May take longer than playing these tournies but is to me a safer way and also will give you good intro to ring that will have you prepared for .5/1.

Poker is a game of dicipline, patience, study and grind you will become a better player for it starting out in that manner, there is no real risk free shortcuts to build your roll.

Do some searching on the Micro Forum pleanty of stories and posts with advice on building a roll from nothing on there.

honestly if i wanted to start a poker bankroll from virtually nothing, i would try to pick up some odd jobs. mowing, window washing, etc...if you aren't into manual labor, sell something on e-bay.

cheers!

Thanks for the advice gents. We'll see what happens. Results not too good today. Cards were mean and I have alot to learn, bad mix. I dont think Im too much different than the average beginner but I do intend to put in the time to learn. I do nothing but think about poker read about poker drive a forklift and oh ya about odd-jobs...on my way to paint the vacant apartment next door.
