I just got back from 5 days at the Mirage. I usually do a trip report but this time I'll just post a few observations for anyone who cares as I spent the week treading water and card dead. It was my 14th poker trip to LV and my first loser albeit it a small one. For the 5 days I lost a grand total of 50 dollars. I was never really up or down the whole trip.

6-12
Anyway the past few trips my bread and butter, go too game was the 6-12 at the Mirage. This game has always been lively and profitable for me in the past. But this trip it sucked. It was a pure granite patch. Rock city! And there was typically only one game going although sometimes 2 in the evenings. Lots of folding and chopping here and very much a weak tight lineup all the time. I spent the first 3 days grinding it out in this crappy game.

3-6
Mirage has tons of 3-6 action going. 2 to 3 tables going 24/7 and in the afternoons and evenings easily 10 to 12 games going. I sat in these a couple of times in the afternoon and the play was ludicrous! I could catch no cards at 3-6 though (other than silver medalists!) and it was the only level I lost at. The first game I sat in featured two guys who entered every hand and usually stayed to the river and usually sucked out whatever they needed. I played this game for about 4 hours and only dragged one pot! I lost twice with fullhouses, 3 times with flopped sets, I lost with flushes and straights and 2 pairs and most definitely with top pair. I was glad it was only 3-6 but at any other game I woulda won a bunch of those hands probably. The river was unmerciful to me in that game as these guys keept turng over hands like 28o or 37o that turned into miracles. My other 3-6 session was similar without all the suckouts. The level of play here is totally clueless.

8-16
Fed up with the crappy 6-12 action I headed to the Bellagio for some 8-16. These games were beautiful. I played in them the last 2 nights. Lots of loose action players. Kinda like the 6-12 used to be on my previous trips. They were coming in with crap and calling you down and paying you off. I did the best at this level as well as had the most enjoyable and fun games at this level. Tables were friendly full of tourists and good action. I could play in games like this for the rest of my life as opposed the rock garden of the 6-12 which was excruciating.

Bellagio
The Bellagio sucks though. It's a madhouse and my last day in I showed up at 4pm and had to wait an hour and a half just to get into a game. Shitty way to spend vacation. The game was good when I got to it though. But the whole procedure at the Bellagio is a pita. You have to wait close enough to hear because you have about 3 seconds to respond or lose your spot and there in no place to sit or wait. Just not a fun experience until you get into a game. I heard the poker room was going to expand. They need a waiting room or something. And I loathe the wobbly ass worn out chairs they have.

Mirage
I really like the Mirage poker room. Much more so than the Bellagio. I like the chairs better, the atmosphere better, but unfortunately this time the 6-12 games sucked. I was gonna try the 10-20 but the little bit that I glanced at it made it look crappy too. Too much 3-6 action and not enough happening above it. Hopefully next trip the 6-12+ games will be more to my liking like they have been in the past.

Baseball
Baseball lines suck in Vegas. Mirage has 20 cent lines, Caesars has 15 cent line and Mandalay has 10 cent lines. I guess Mirage/Bellaghio doesn't want baseball action? I rarely bet much baseball in Vegas anyway because I am away from the internet and all my databases but I have to think with all the good lines you can get from various offshore books that only a pure chump would bet in those casinos.

Anyway the weather was great for poolside mageritas and the 8-16 was great and I'll be back in the fall for some more of the same.

Mr. Baseball,

Don't be prepared to throw in the towel so quickly on these types of games, as they can be very profitable. The key is to try and "fit in" as another one of the rocks, but step up the bluffing/semi-bluffing and blind stealing.

Playing against weak/tight opponents can be fun. I'm not suggesting that you play like a maniac, but just dial it up a notch. You'll be surprised at how often they cave in. I should know, I used to be "one of them".

Actually I did okay in those games and I did shift gears a little and steal some blinds and got them to lay down some hands. But I'm on vacation! I don't want to grind it out with rocks. I want to laugh it up with the loose tourists. The loose tourists will always be more fun and more profitable.

Hopefully the 6-12 was just an aboration this trip because that game has been wild and fun in the past and I hope it is again when I come back in the fall. As I said I much much much prefer the Mirage to Bellagio but this trip that 8-16 game was tons better than the 6-12.

The 6-12 is rarely any good anymore. Your first impression is right - all of the good action has moved to the 8-16 at Bellagio. I love that game.

But still, after not being staked enough to play "real" stakes (15-30 or above) and playing with so many newbie fish lately, it's sometimes a pleasant experience to get into a game and steal some blinds instead of always having to catch cards and showdown at the end. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am heading to vegas for the first time later this summer. I stick to limits from 5-10 to 10-20 in holdem, and will play some 10-20 or 15-30 stud if I can find a really good game. So to find a quality game on the strip at those limits, are the Bellagio and Mirage pretty much my only choices?

I've played the six-twelve when it payed off like a broken slot machine and I've hit it when the table was full of gravestones. I think it's like most places...some days are better than others. That's the truth about having just a few days or a week to burn in Vegas. You run the risk of jumping from crappy to crappier games when you know that you've had some of the best play of your life at the same places. It can be frustrating but such is the game.

One part of your piece really stuck out. Since leaving the low end of the game forever, specifically 3-6, I re-discovered why I love poker. I would suggest that 8-16 become your entry-level area and that the 10-20 games are more plentiful and normally require some level of skill. 15-30 can be terrific.

With 7-10 players on every flop and people raising with pure dog dirt for hole cards, the 3-6 and 4-8 games are sometimes closer to Keno than Poker, although some people like that kind of game. You can do well in them but mainly you will get drilled by the idiot on his 12th beer who had one out and hit it on the river after you raised him three times. It's just too dumb for words. The worst part is the "nice hand" congratulations he will get from the just-as-sober crowd around him. Move up a level ... you'll like Vegas a lot more.
