View Full Version : Friday and Saturday nights are goldmines, right?

Hey guys. I was looking at my PT stats last night and saw the unbelievable. I make money every day of the week except for Friday and Saturday. I have 2500+ hands for every day of the week, which isn't a ton, but still should be enough to get a decent gauge.

I guess what I'm looking for are potential explanations. The games on Friday and Saturday nights are much looser and can range from limpfests to maniac conventions, so while they are higher variance games, they should be +EV games. Has anyone else seen this in your play? Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Raiser,

The looser games on the weekends definately are higer EV games in the long run. I had the same problem playing in loose games online and in the B&M's. When playing in looser games you do have to make some adjustments to how you play. While not getting into specific strategy concepts, the general rule outlined in HPFAP is to play tighter pre-flop and looser post flop. Your good hands are not going to hold up as often in these games but when they do, you will win more bets with them.

One of the problems I have playing in these games online that I don't have in a B&M is that on-line players tend to not play long. So you often can't wait out the bad players. Oftentimes, when I have zeroed in on the playing styles of the bad players in these wild games, many leave before you get an opportunity to exploit their weaknesses. They are then replaced by 'new' bad players and you have to start clocking their play from scratch. I find this a little frustrating. The upside of this is that on-line I keep a list of these bad players and I can seek them out at a later time.

The bottom line is that patience will get you the money (in the long run).

Good Luck,

I can give you an explanation in one word: Variance.

The looser the game, the more variance there is. Last weekend I lost just under 100BB in 2000 hands (-5BB/100). Seems terrible, but I'm still up quite a bit on weekends since I've had weekends where I'd be up over 100BB. It just seemed like I was constantly getting run down (I also found I was a little tilty after two AA hands got run down by suited rags in a 30 minute span).

Besides seeing a problem I had, the good news is, because I was getting run down so much, I got frustrated and played a couple of online tournaments, which I normally don't play (I only play B&M tourneys, generally). I finished well up in both tournaments, to make up for the losses I took.

Also, go through your sessions to see what happened... maybe you went on tilt and loosened up just a little, or made some mistakes. Or maybe you are just being chased down more often by calling stations. Whatever happens, just remember casinos make money because of the SMALL odds in their favor. Keep playing strong poker and those odds ride out for you.
