My friends and I are going to be in Vegas in a couple of weeks and I was wondering where a bunch of us mediocre online hold 'em players can find good games in Vegas B&M casinos? We are staying at the Luxor, but wouldn't mind traveling away from the strip if it meant finding a weaker game.

Most of us have NEVER played in a B&M casino before. Where would you suggest finding some beatable 2/4 or 3/6 games, or even a $100 buy-in tourney, to get our feet wet?

I know we'll be there during all of the WSOP satellites, but, although it would be fun, I think a $255 rebuy tourney is over our heads.

Thanks for whatever suggestions you may have.

Just play at the Luxor or the Excalibur.

Very beatable, B&M beginner friendly rooms.

Luxor usually has a $1-2 game after they do their tutorial, and spread $2-4 and $1-4-8-8.

Excalibur has $1-3 spread and $2-6 spread I believe.

If you find one that isn't very "beatable", I'd be surprised. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think the Luxor has a 2/4 game. I believe they also have daily tournaments for fairly low buy-ins. Excalibur has low-limit games I believe. Mirage has a nice poker room and they spread 3/6. Seriously though, any 2/4 or 3/6 game you find will be fairly soft and a good place to start if you haven't played at a B&M yet. Good luck on your trip.

Try the Orleans. It's a $20 cab ride from the strip, but has HE tournements several times a week for less than $100.

Weekday tourneys are about $60.

I was there earlier this month and the card room was great. Busy on the weekend. But less than an hour wait. They spread 2/4 and up.

Anywhere they spread 3/6 and 4/8 it's a very soft game - unless the planets align or something. Just make sure you have the roll to play. Bring about 75-100BB with you. Be ready for a very passive, calling-station filled game. Think 1-2 online Party. Play from 8pm on the weekend and take advantage of the drunks or during the day during the week and take advantage of the rocks.

myself, and another rank beginner went in mid march with a third guy who'd played some B&M (& pontoon) on river boats in St Louis.

We stayed at the Orleans and loved it, we played there, Luxor, Bellagio, & Mirage. I was most impressed with the Tourney's at the Orleans. DEFINITELY play either their limit &/or no limit hold em. EXCEEDINGLY well run tourney's
my buddy actually finished 5th out of ~180 entrants, and won ~$970. Casino rate available for five hours of play a day (per room) no matter how many are in the room playing for the rate.. Check their website for the schedules. signup starts around 9 am (ask 'em when)

If you are seated playing, they come to all the tables first, to take names for the tourney. Once your name is down on the list - you get to CUT IN LINE in front of everyone else to pay your fee and get the entry card without having to wait.

I was VERY impressed. I am a beginner though. Also they charge half price blinds in the live games. ie $4-$8 has $1 small, and $2 big blinds. thus, if no one bets preflop, it is only $2 to see the flop. IF someone one bets it ($4) it is now $6 to go. (unless there's another $4 raise.

Be sure to catch an orleans tourney!!!
have fun, and good luck. pm me if you have any ?s, and how you like your tourney experience.

I really like the room at the Mirage. The 3/6 was good, it's a beautiful place inside and the staff was nice as well.

I really didn't like the Luxor, too much smoke for me. I only made it through an hour before I had to get up.

dittos on the smoke a the luxor. they have these small, wheeled tables one can pull up behind one's chair, and merely swivel one's arse w/o getting up from the table to smoke

I went in March and I'm going back next week. In addition to those places already mentioned the Monte Carlo has a nice 2/4 game. It was about as soft as the Luxor game but the MC poker room is very nice, dealers and staff are very friendly, etc.
One other piece of advice, if you play any spread limit (like at the Excalibur) take a look at HEPFAP's section on non-standard games, as it has some good tips. Good luck.

Luxor
is running a promotion for the night owls high hand giveaway.
1st- 500 2nd- 300 3rd- 200 4th- 100
it goes from 3am to 9am on mondays.

Monte Carlo

very soft games real nice people there and you can order from there micro brewery while you play.

Mandalay Bay

i think this has got to be the best room for low limit players. There jackpots are great and the 4-8 is softest in town. Call the pokerroom before you go over and they will put you on the list.

Orleans

Avoid this room if possible grouchy locals who think they are god. Though best line of my trip came out of this room:
" You must be one of those 2+2 guys who think they know everything "
