View Full Version : Card Player Magazine -- Changing Format

I am a moron that just paid $100+ for a subscription only to find out the following:

1) The subscription price will soon be dropped to $39.95
2) The content of the magazine will be changing.

I am most upset about item #2. To appeal to the new demographic of new players being attracted by what they see on TV the magazine will "dummy down" the content with fewer insider tips, and highlight poker lifestyles, like profiling Chris Moneymaker. Jeff Shulman says, "It will be a cross between People, Sports Illustrated and Card Player magazines."

I don't want "dummy down". I don't want "People Magazine". I don't care if "Christopher Moneymaker" is an aspiring gourmet chef.

If anyone else out there read CardPlayer I'd like to hear your opinions as well.

The masses are asses. And the masses just started getting into poker. Good for playing, bad for reading a magazine trying to please them and maximize their profits.

I liked Card Player because of the format. It was the best magazine on any type of gambling because it actually talked about tips and strategies not just garbage that nobody cared about. I wonder if it will still be 26 issues a year.

This disturbs me also. I like the magazine exactly the way it is, hell the fish they are going to go after won't be around that long anyway.
I fear change!

I hear you when you day #2 is more disappointing, but you might still want to drop them a note and ask what they can do about extending the life of your subscription.

One thing I wish would change:

When Linda Johnson was running the show, there was a much greater emphasis put upon encouraging players to behave like ladies and gentlemen. Every issue had at least one piece that made it clear that acting like an ass was not cool.

I really think that made a difference in the world.

I hope you realize that other forms of gambling cant really give you tips.

Feature stories:

"Roulette Illustrated" When the tides turn from black is hot, to red is due!

"Carribean Stud Monthly" Stay in with A-K-Q-8-3 or better, you'll still lose....but not as quickly! Check out next months issue for the same hot tip.

blackjack and craps have alot of strategy to them. they are still long term losers(unless you can count at bj) but they both have strategy. if im gambling with the wife and friends for fun and not profit then i usually play craps instead of holdem. i can drink and really have a good time in a very sociable game. i wish it was possible to win consistantly because that would be a great job! but alas i can only cut the houses edge to a fraction but it is still an edge. it is alot of fun though, just not profitable in the long run.

Where did you read about #2?

I read all of the articles free on-line. When I happen to be in a casino I pick up the magazine for free.

I thought it was already dumbed-down. With the exception of a couple of authors, there is that much useful poker content in there.

Yup, Card Player took a big hit when Brier stopped writing his column.

Everything by Sklansky and Malmuth is still worth reading, but that's about it now.

JTG you are kidding yourself if you don't think that Hellmuth's and Negreanu articles are worth the read. I personally think the content is valuable, especially from Negreanu. But there is no debating that the articles are entertaining and always worth the quick read.

Id say 80% is worth reading, you can always learn a little bit here and there...even if it is just a reminder of a simple concept. Cooke is amazing. I wish that one guy would stop all that crap about turning off the lights on the way out though........

Negreanu is the best, IMO. He outlines his thinking in detail and doesn't leave out important details about the hand, like some of the other authors. And, of course, he's a world class player. Hellmuth is good too, for the same reasons, although you have to filter out the whining when you read /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. You are right about Negreanu, but I'd rather pull my own teeth out than read one of Hellmuth's articles.

Since you are a consistent Hellmuth basher ever since I have read any post from you, I understand where you are coming from, but the fact is that his articles especially recently have been pretty good. Also, since you say you rarely (never?) read him its tough for you to form an opinion. Read his current article...it won't turn you into a WCP but it is pretty entertaining

I'm not sure I'd call myself a consistent Hellmuth basher. I don't like him, but I don't think I've mentioned him in more than five posts over the last couple of years.

As for his column, I read every issue of Card Player cover to cover for about two years. I found a handful of them useful and thought the rest were just bad beat stories disguised as an educational column. I admit that I haven't read any in a few months so if he's gotten better, I wouldn't know.

I'll take your advice and read his latest column.

this is EXTREMELY disappointing to hear (I'm also one of the suckers that paid $109). I fired off an email and I'll post any response I get.

I'd suggest that you cancel your subscription, request a full refund, and provide them the URL of this thread by way of explanation.

I just love this sentence:

"To ensure that Card Player was the only game in town, Barry bought the only rival publication, Poker Digest, in 2002 for $800,000 solely to kill it."

That should be pinned up on every freemarket economist's office in the world.

So much for Adam Smith's invisible hand...

I recieved a response from the cardplayer staff yesterday, no mention of upcoming format changes, but it appears the reason for the upcoming price cut is mainly due to postage. I'm still disappointed they have decided to change their format, but this letter satisfied my concerns regarding cost...

Jason,

Regarding your concern about our subscription rate. Right now, we are still charging all renewals and or new subscribers the current price of $109.00 domestic.

However, we are working toward lowing prices substantially within this year. In order for us to do this, we must first get approved by the USPS for a periodical rate, which will lower the shipping cost for our subscribers. Right now shipping is the main reason for our high price. It currently cost $3.85 to mail all our domestic magazines. With hopes of getting approved by the USPS for periodical rate our shipping charge will be cut half that price. Therefore we can then reduce the price of our subscription.

Unfortunately the process does take over 3 months and could take longer, if we are not approved by the USPS.

Once we are approved we will make sure that whom ever paid the original price for there $109 subscription will get an extended subscription. But right now I cannot tell what the extension number is.

If you have any other questions or concerns please contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Jessica Molina
Office Manager
